Looking for suggestions on some budget headers. The engine is a 400 that is .030 over, torker 2 intake, XE 284 cam, 670 heads w/engine work to get the comp down to the low 9's, th400 tranny, going with a Holley 750 DP and some Spin Techs. The theme of the car is BUDGET. Between the Hooker and Heddman headers, which ones will work out the best?

Find swap meet 1 3/4" headers. Those companies have started screwing us even harder than they did before with pissant 1 5/8" power robbers they call a performance product. 1 5/8" works on a stock 302, not 400's. Seriously, check all the boards for sale sections and see what you can find. New 1 5/8" headers are a waste of time.

I believe there is a post in the archive which references header comparison test done by the Hand's. If memory serves me correct, the 1 5/8" was very competitive with the larger size headers tested.
I think? |

You are also talking about a much heavier car vs. the Firebird. I trried it, and there is a serious difference in performance. Something else to consider; With marginal pump gas quality, the engine with the larger headers will run cooler because the not as much heat is kept in it. This can also lead to a less likely chance of "ping" with the larger headers. I've seen it on my own stuff.
