I have my bathtub apart and it appears that the epoxy that was on the port dividers is gone [bare aluminum annd fairly flat. What is the best shape to reform them into? Just a semicircle?
Also what would be the best way to keep the epoxy in place/ I thought about drilling 3 or 4 1/8 holes in the dividers and pushing roll pins in to give the epoxy something to cling to but I sure don't want to injest a roll pin. Now I am thinking of just a groove. Any suggestions. |

you might think about just drilling the holes in the dividers and filling in with epoxy. if you are blending into the port some, holes drilled diagonally into the port wall will help anchor the epoxy also. use a rough carbide burr all around the area. i use lacquer thinner to clean all traces of fuel. Meaux uses splash zone, then a good quality auto body clear coat paint to seal the epoxy from fuel. use several coats of the clear coat and blend to the aluminum. a semi-flat surface is pretty much the norm and not a pointed divider.

You can either drill into your intake and make a hole to hold the epoxy as it would actuly be the plug for the hole, or weld a few locating pins in place so you don't have to worry about one going thru the valve. I like the holes as that allows you to shape the epoxy without interference and if it come lose, you will know because of the leak in the intake. But the hole does need to be a fairly desent size, such as a 1/4" -3/8".

I would tap the holes also, it will give the epoxy something extra to bite into.
We pour alot of urethane molds where I work and that's what we do to retain the urethane to the metal backing plate. I was also wondering if your intake is divided into smaller plenums under the carbs or is it open all the way across the plenum. Thanks:Rick |

Because the dividers can be accessed with a torch have them welded and then shaped for a permanent fix. Inside the intake is a fairly hostile environment and the epoxy needs all the help it can get to hang on. Asking it to adhere to the divider is as you found a difficult and short lived task. Place as large a radius on the divider as possible whatever the material you choose.

Dave can you just get it welded up and then shape it with die grinder ?? If you are worried about it warping bolt to a set of heads mounted on a old block... Of course I've never looked inside a bath tub either.. We used epoxy to "stuff" 2 cyle crankcases and had a tough time with the oil/gas mix loosening it up...went to aluminum welding to keep pieces where they belonged..
