Red Upholstery
Well, the new vinyl for my bucket seats came in the mail on Friday. They look really nice, however I don't know how I feel about the color. I ordered the metallic red which is the only red available that I could see yet the seats look very different than my old door panels and even the vinyl sides of the old bench. Now I know there will be variations due to age and dirt and wear and tear, but the new metallic red vinyl has an orangish almost salmon colored look to it. My old seats and door panels are much more red. Anyone else out there with red interior that can clarify this?
BTW, I did order these through PY and they sent me the color sample prior to ordering and it too seemed a tad lighter. Second question is in regards to the center console. The black plastic base of the console, should that stay black or is it red in the cars with red interior? -Steve

console is black
It matches the color of the plastic inserts on the dash. On Catalinas these are black plastic. On GP's and Bonnies these are the walnut veneers; their consoles have walnut veneers and it's the same set up for the steering wheels too. This is true for 65 and 66's.
On the other hand, it's your car so have fun and do it your way! Good Luck!

My door panels (believed to be originals) seem to have ALMOST ALMOST a salmon flare to it when the sun strikes it. Maybe someone touched up your door panels at some point with some vinyl paint and it's no longer the original?
My interrior's apholstry (replaced by some prev. owner) is a deeper - almost burgandy- red but I have no issues with it. I'd say unless your shooting for car shows, then pick an apholstry that matches what you like most. If that requires a refund on your PY stuff then so be it  have fun! mike |

Your plastic console base would match your interior color. At least that is how it is on my GP. Then woodgrain inserts. You would have black color inserts for a 2+2 or Cat.
You could have vinyl dye done to match your seats & then spray your panels etc. to match. This would work for spraying your plastic console base too. If you send a sample, there are various suppliers who will mix dye to match the sample. Much cheaper than re-doing the vinyl door panels etc. It works very well. May as well get it all right now. Nothing is getting any cheaper.

I called PY today and the metallic red I got is in fact the only red available. So I'm wondering if maybe the Cats and Bonnevilles maybe had a slightly darker red interior and the GP's and 2+2's had this lighter metallic red....? It's really hard to say, but I'll probably stick with these because I don't know what else to do. I don't know if it's really worth spending a bunch more money to have them dyed or whatever else. If I can, I'll post a picture tomorrow showing the difference.

There has been a guy here in georgia that has a complete red set up for a 65 or 66 for just under 3 grand. His listing is in smoke signals.

Here's a pic of the interior of my '66 Catalina. The door panels are original, the buckets and console are from a GP. All of the red matches. I was planning on getting the 2+2 seat covers from PY too, maybe not now! Although I've heard that the 2+2 buckets were narrower than those in the GP, if so, I may have to find a local shop to recover them.

I can see the color issue. The repo seats are a bit off. I think there are a few issues at play here. *You are right on the money about the age, dirt, UV exposure and cleaning materials causing subtle color changes. *There may have also been subtle differences from batch to batch at the opriginal manufacturer. *Lastly metalic red is a VERY tough color to match (vinyl, paint, anything). Back in the early 90's I had a 65 2+2 and a pair of 65 Bonnevilles all with red interiors (I love Pontiac red metalic interiors!!!). The vinyl color of the 2+2 one of the Bonnevilles was very close, the other Bonneville not so close. As this was all original material I would have to attribute the color issues to age/use and batch to batch variation. Also note that on the Bonneville that matched the 2+2 the seats and door panels were off a little from each other. It is possible the material the seats are made to match an original "NOS" material sample or a know original sample that has had a different history than yours. Id use then in your situation. Cool, thanks for the input. I've decided to go with them. Once I get the door panels done and the rear seat, it should all match pretty nicely.

seeing all these red interriors make me want to redo my red interrior with a more metallic red (like the salmon one shown in the above pics).
Mine was redone by a previous owner and looks great but its a little darker than those pictured above. Great choice to go with it, please post pics of end results / process! |
