I'm starting to restore a 68 gto. This is a learning project for me.I can't seem to identify the engine thats in it.I don't know if its the original 400 6.5 8 cylinder or not.Ive looked on the internet for hours but I'm getting more confused by the engine identification sites.looked where i was supposed to but can't find anything.is this not a 68 engine?
This is what i found on the head firing order 18438672 below that 8780140 another one lenghtwise 1267 on the front passanger side of the block by the rad it has this 144382 or 144332 on the side of the engine just below the valve covers it has this D N 3 6 on both sides.also has a much smaller number /1147\ on one side and -1057\ on the other ANYTHING you can tell me would be very much appreciated. |

Pull the distributor and look for the casting numbers identifying the year of the block in the area where the distributor drops in.
Read this whole page........ http://www.boyleworks.com/ta400/psp/blockID.html 16 heads could have been on various 68-69-70 400 engines, but time has a way of moving these things around

It has #16 Heads, and the intake number should be 9790140, not 8780140.
check the 2 letter code on the front of the block under the passenger side head, next to the water pump. Auto would be YS, Manual would be WT for a 68. And like David said, back by the distributor will be your date code - 4 digits, the first will be a letter.

Ron,
9790071 was also used for the 69 model year. Get the casting date from the distributor pad, and the front of the right cylinder bank, near the timing cover. The four digit numbers that you gave probably began with an "I" instead of a "1", which would be September of 67. Anything with a casting date that starts with a "G" or later letter would have been for the next model year, so it appears that yours is, by the codes that you have given us, a 68. Oh! I just saw the WT part of your post. In 69, the WT was a 360hp manual transmission engine. In 69, it was rated at 350hp. P.S. I'm on most of the boards, so you can go back and tell them that you made a mistake on the block casting number. I know I was wondering WTF a 9790017 block was!

This page clearly shows where all the casting numbers and stampings on the block are. Other pages of the site show head codes, etc...

Thanks for all your replies.my eyes arn't so good so its hard to find some of these numbers. The data code under the distributer says J067 so it was oct of 67? The block casting number is for sure 9790071 that would make it a 68.So was it made in 67 for the 68 year?
