Who here has rattle canned their car? I'm talking more about maybe a primer coat, not the finishing coat. I'm thinking of doing it until I get my car to the painter in 3-4 years.

don't bother if you are going to use primer. Primer does not seal out moisture, so rust can happen under the primer. Best to use some type of paint instead, rattle can or whatever. Pick a brand, find it cheap, paint it on and go.

If so I can't imagine why you'd want to. Hit it with some rubbing compound and enjoy it as it sits. Painting it with spray can primer will do nothing but make a pretty decent looking car look like crap in my opinion, seen that done too many times to otherwise nice-looking cars.

Dont do it dude. Better off going to MAACO for a $200 spray it all special. Comon think about it. Spend a weekend takin' off all the trim and taping stuff. Then pull it into MAACO. It's a horrible paint but it'll look a million times better than your "rattle can". Plus the time it takes you to spray it with your rattle can you could have pulled the trim with time to spare. Comon' you can pull together $200 bucks. Save it up. You'll spend close to that much on the gas to WALMART and 100 cans of 99cent rattle can paint.

I hear ya!!! I'll hit it with some rubbing compound and a buffer and call it good. No need to make it look like ish for 3 years until I paint it for good. Really the white paint on it is pretty fair, no chipping or pealing.

The pictures make it look better than in person, but no way would I primer this car. I'd bet your paint is in just as good or even better condition than mine. ![]()

Bart, that Tempest is nice. Didnt see it when I was there saturday. When I was 5 years old my dad had one and while we were at a gas station I released the parking brake and it rolled into one of the gas pumps. I still remember a bunch of people yelling while I sat in the drivers seat with a big smile on my face. These were the days before parents put their kids in car seat, heck, I was lucky if my dad even buckled me in ever!!!

You can barely see it in the background just above the carb in this pic, hiding in the shadows and waiting for a heart transplant.

This pic was taken during my mockup of all the external pieces. I made up a new throttle bracket, PCV breather tube, hot air stove, spacer for the power steering pump bracket, fuel pressure return regulator bracket and fuel line, etc.

Be sure to post a couple of pics of your Firebird after you give the body a good rubdown, that's really a pretty clean looking first-gen.

I cant wait to get the thing on the road. But I want to make sure it's done right and not fast. I'm planning on an 08 summer release. MR PUSHROD has helped me a TON, he's a great guy. I want to make sure the tranny and engine are rock solid before moving on. My wife on the other hand wanted me to fix all the cosmetics and drive it as is. Funny how thinking is so reversed between men and woman. So far I've gotten a TH400 and had it rebuilt, bought some 670 heads, and in the middle of getting the block down to get machined and putting in a balanced rotating assembly .030 over.

If i never had painted my car it would be flat black today.
I was making it a show car at first........then I got the bug. If I could go back I would have not put 6000 bucks in paint and body work into the car. |

Pushrod - who did the $6,000 paint and body? cm
