I am finding it difficult to properly align the rear bumper. The bumper can be moved w/in a .25 inch of the lower inside edge of the tail lights, however at the same time the bumper is over .50 to .75 inches below the outside edge of both tail lights. This is the original bumper that has been rechromed and does not appear to be bent. I do not have a center support and am unsure if that would help the alignment. I see many 69 GTO's with the same problem. Is this factory? Age? Poor alignment? . I would love to have the bumper be parallel to the bottom edge of both tail lights. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks, JP |

Welcome to PY, on my old '69, I worked for quite a while to get the bumper and taillights to line up. What I found was that the taillight stud holes drilled in the rear tail panel at the factory were far from level. Put a level on them and the bumper and see which one is off. I ended up removing the taillights and taking a porting burr and oblonging the tail panel stud holes to allow the taillights to be aligned properly and level. It came out fine once I worked with it for a good half day. Since then, I have noticed most every other '69 GTO I saw had the same problem. I'm not saying this is for sure your cars problem, it could be the bumper, but check the taillights alignment for sure.

Hey, thanks for the insight. I checked the taillights to see if level and for the most part they are. Maybe the bumper would fit better if I could find the missing support in the middle of the bumper just to the left of the gas tank filler neck. I could slightly torque( bend ) each end of the bumper prior to tightening the bolts . I have had no luck finding this support piece online. I'll continue my search and maybe try a junkyard. It's been so long since I've been to a junk yard , I wonder if they still have any old cars left!
