Default New Rope seal question - crank is tight

My question is, when you installed the rope seal - did your crank spin freely or did you notice some resistance?

After installing the crank with the new graphtite rope seal in place, the crank doesn't spin freely in my motor. I can't feel any binding - doesn't feel like anything's whacked - just not sure how snug it should be. I'm going to let it sit overnight and see if it loosens up a little.

When I did the install, I followed the instructions on trimming. I also used a large socket to press the seal down into the groove firmly. It looked like it was down tight on both cap and block sides. This is my first rope seal so I don't know what to expect upon install and the shop is closed now.

Thanks in advance!!

Joe

I seem to remember a breakaway torque of about 20 ft-lbs on a new rebuild and a new rope seal. That is with only the bearings, seal and crank installed. That comes down quickly with just a llittle bit of running.

The one we installed almost locked the motor up solid. It took a bit of effort the first time to turn the crank, then it free'd up nicely. The more we worked on the engine and turned it through to install pistons, set valves, etc, the better it got. By the time we were done with the build you could almost turn it by hand.....Cliff

I'd hafta agree with these guys, not unusual for a rope seal to be a little tight at first.

Lots of guys used to use rolling pins for stuffing rope seals in blocks, worked great!

Just dont let the Mrs. in on your special use for the rolling pin...

Like the rest have said, it's pretty normal for the crank to turn pretty stiff right after the seal has been installed. I'll bet by tommorrow it will already start to turn easier.

Thanks guys, much appreciated. I have peace of mind now

I only have the crank and cam in the block right now and it about locked it up too - had to tighten down slowly. Got it done though - hopefully I'm on my way to a dry clutch dump
