Getting started on putting a new motor in my transam, and not sure what size or type of carb to use. Looking for suggestions on either.

pontiac 455 bored 30 over
forged piston
6x heads with 60 thousands removed to make 9.1-1 comp
comp cam 268/dual springs

Thanks for any help

A good custom built 76 up Q-jet would be my recommendation.

Didn't mean to offend anybody posting this motor combo in race, but I have a friendly bet for grudge night at the drag against a fairly stock 1970 455 skylark gs when it's up and running, but yes this is a basic street engine. Can't afford everything all at once. Should be a close match. It's taking a lot just to go from 403 olds auto, to 455 pontiac 4speed. Hoping to be in the high 13's . But thanks anyway I'll repost on street.

ps thanks jeff for recomendation
and shaker455 can't read mail til I get back to work

THANK YOU

I replaced the 403 with a 455 Pontiac in my 79 T/A as well. If you have any questions, shoot me an email at [email protected].

My suggestion would be for a prepped Q-Jet as well.

If you still have the 1979 Pontiac carburetor, I'd use it. It will require minor modifications for the new engine, but there isn't anything else out there that will work better, street or at the track.

I use a 1977 Pontiac carburetor on my own 455, it has been dyno, and track tested against quite a few Holley and Demon "race" carburetors, and has outpowered or outran them every time.....Cliff

whats wrong with the earlier qjets? i have the orig from my 71 455 thinking it was "good" but i guess not? what would be needed for the early ones and why are they inferior? is it just the cfm? also 79transam79 if jeff is that close to you it is a no brainer to use him plus his work is top notch. i sure wish he was the close to me it would have made this summer alot easier.

Scott,
There's nothing wrong with the eariler Qjets, I own quite a few...the later ones had more adjustability and have features like APT and a slightly larger primary (800 CFM) for example.
