Okay fellas, the SD is in the shop for paint. This is the second paint job this old war dog has been given. I want to be sure it's correct. I've heard that some of these measurements may not be correct, and I don't see anything for the fender measurements at all.

Can one of you original paint job gurus confirm what I have here and let me know what the correct measurement are for the fender decals? Mine also only has the baby bird on the nose.

you've got the 73 assembly manual sheets for the decals. the nose bird gets centered on the "bump" with the wingtips .32-in. from the rear edge of the bumper. the fender decal goes .82 inch below the fender crease as measured from the top edge of the "T" and 3 inches from the back edge of the "M" to the rear edge of the fender. on the other side of the car, it's from the edge of the top bar of the "T" to the fender edge.

same as yours, sheet 1a2f 4, the "view B" is the fender decal, nose bird measurement is on sheet 3. read sheet three carefully and you'll see a footnote that the fender decal measurements and install directions are on sheet 4. ;~)

I'll reply with a little info regarding the engine March, 73-74 engine paint color. I've seen and had the slate blue paint made by OEM, part #62230, which is advertised as correct for these cars. Seeing it, I always felt it was too dark, so I went with OEM 62220, which is advertised for early 73. In my mind, but only from memory, I felt that it was closer to what I'd seen on other original TAs. However, discussions on this site made me question my choice more. Now, after talking with Steve Schappaugh, and having him send me some paint that he had matched off of a very low mile car and a 2-week-old intake, I now see that I was off in my memory also. In the pictures below, the light blue is OEM 62220, the dark is OEM 62230, and the middle is Steve's paint. I am very pleased with the results and feel that it is probably the most correct color paint for these cars. The pictures were taken in daylight with no flash.

i think our last "conversation" here is why i brought this up, i have exactly the same feeling about the 62230 and 62220 paint, having had them both on the engine and having seen the original paint on my oil pan when i stripped the car down back in 1998. my engine had been overpainted with the silver blue metallic, but the pan had some original on it yet. neither of the rattle can paints matches what i found under the grime, but the 62230 is probably the closest on the market in a spray can. i spoke with oem about that paint and they said it was developed off the formula, but i could imagine that differences in the paints/pigments used across 30 years could lead to some variation.

Try the PPG DP #74 since its correct for 1973-1974 sd cars right out of the can.
Also did that timing decal work out OK?

DP #74? That number doesn't make sense to me. Just go to the paint shop and ask for PPG DP #74? I see from a paint chip website a PPG 14580 that's supposed to be the 73-74 engine blue. I've ordered a quart to compare to what Steve sent me.

I sent a picture of the valve cover decal to you to get your opinion, but haven't heard back. Did you get it? Oh hell, I'll just attach a picture.

SD engine paint is: Dupont Centari #31026 AM Medium Blue the PPG number is for the Red Oxide. Opps!
The sticker looks ok for now but we need to make a couple adjustments for it to be correct. Hope to get my printer thing fixed here this month and will send you a updated one soon.

My 2 cents worth. The 62230, the color to the left in your photo, gets my vote. Several years ago before the correct (???) rattle can color was available, I picked up a quart of the 73-74 Pontiac engine paint from Scott Tieman at his (mostly Pontiac) restoration shop in Portland, Michigan. I compared his color to an original paint 1974 Firebird 400 engine, in both the exposed & more secluded areas of the engine. The color was right on. I don't know if he still sells the paint, but if he does here is another source for engine paint.

Pictures can play tricks with color and, as I showed with my experience, memory isn't always the best to go by.

SDFormula, did you actually compare Tieman's paint with 62230? The reason I say is that it could be the variance in color in the pictures and memory that make it look like the darker blue is correct.

All I know is that, in my experience and opinion, having seen 62230 on cars at the same show with original cars, it is definitely too dark. And, when I've got a guy who owns 9 super dutys, including low mile originals, and had the color matched off of a 14000 mile valve cover and a 1 week old intake, I tend to lend quite a bit of credibility to his opinion in color.

My comments were reguarding the three engine paint colors you displayed earlier in this thread. Taking into account the various ways that colors can change when reproduced via computers, the one on the left (62230) looked, to me, to be the closest to what I have. I have not compared the Tieman paint to any other paints, only an original paint engine. I would be happy to send you a sample of the actual paint color dabbed onto a piece of paper. Here's a nice white/red interior 73 in reasonable shape for $69,000. It has a 74 SD motor. Too bad he tossed the original cracked block.

Notice that LS2 intake which appears to be a 74 LS2X or a very late production 73?

The white 73 SD on ebay does have a number of missing or incorrect parts under the hood. The intake manifold does appear to be a correct 73 SD. Can't be certain without seeing the number in front of the carburetor.
