What it lacks in correct parts, it more than makes up in rare vintage JC Whitney add-ons!
;-)

I do like the car, especially the red interior. I wish I had the funds it would be a nice project (if I ever finish my 72).

I know the seller of this car, not the owner, and I think he is giving it a fair shake. It obviously is not a 74 intake as we have seen LS2 intakes that appear to be set up as 74's (SDD).

Even though it is not a concourse 73, I think his description is honest and forthright. He doesn't appear to be hiding anything from a potential buyer. This seller is usually willing to refund a deposit if you feel the car was misrepresented when you see it in person.

If you need me to look at it I am not far from it at all. PM if you desire that.

I had the opportunity to see this car today. The seller (not the owner) lives two blocks from my home. Let me ask, how many true 1973 SD cars have been for sale in the last year (under 100k). Should someone want a true Super Duty here is your chance! Sure their is some in-correct items. If I had the dough, it would be two blocks closer!!

that.
I talked with this seller 6 days ago and I think this car is what he describes it to be. NOT original in many ways, but it is an X code 73 with a 74 Y8 block. It will be interesting to see how much this car will bring.
I would like to see the numbers by the carb on his intake.
I have the same cast code LS2 (no X) date code K172. with the “re-stamped” # of 5170, to make it a 495170 # intake. Note that the 49 starting numbers are still raised, i.e./ as cast.Original. K172 should stand for November, 17th , ’72.

I have been told this is a 74 as the 73,s were re-stamped as 494405 not 495170 but still only the raised 49 on the 73’s as well.
I have a late ship date of 08-07-73 for this SD one of the last ‘73s.
Note the different placement of the vacuum switch, basically 74 vacuum line routing.
In both LS2 and LS2 X the last 4 raised numbers, by the carb are ground off and are re-stamped as far as I know. Please advise.

Please view pics and respond with advice and opinions.

mine and several other 73's i've seen had the entire number wiped and restamped with 494405. makes sense though that some of the k172 batch might have gotten used on 74s.

The 74 intake number is 495107 not 495170

I have seen examples of both the "49" cast with the "5107" stamped, and the whole number "495107" stamped.

These intakes were used on early 74's through about Jan of 1974. They all have the K172 date, as the 73's did also. These intakes are all the same casting, the 73's have the 494405 cast/stamped on them and also have the drilled and tapped hole on the RH side of the water crossover.

It appears that left over 73 castings were machined, restamped, and used on the early 74's.

All of the LS2X manifolds I have seen have the 495107 number cast, not stamped.

The photos in SDD's post are of an early 74 intake. The vacuum switch on the intake runner is also a 74 piece.

Question

TMB:

Are you stating that some early 74 SD's did not come with the LS2X intake and instead had the LS2 that was machined like the 74 intake?

I have never seen that before but I have not had near the exposure to these cars that you have. Very interesting information.

FTR, my 74 LS2X intake has the PN fully cast in. No stampings. Mine is a later 4 speed car built in late 6/74

out of curiosity, what's the cast date on the intake bob? i was wondering if there are some sd parts that only saw one casting batch. I agree with TMB on this, that yes, some were modified to use on the 74s.

Yes Bob, the early 74 intakes were LS2, not LS2X.

The early 74 SD cars used the left over 73 engine parts. You will find Nov-Dec 72 cast dates on the heads and block on the early 74 SD cars.

It seems that the supply of blocks ran out first as I have seen Jan 73 dated blocks on some early 74 cars. The intakes changed to the LS2X some time in Jan 74, I have seen 72 date coded heads on some late Feb 74 built cars.

I have not seen any intakes or heads cast in 74, all have 72 or 73 date codes. I have seen SD blocks cast in 74 (including SR blocks).

All 73 SD engines should have cast dates in Nov or Dec 72 on the block, heads and intake.

I have seen one 73 SD TA with a Jan 73 dated block, it was an obvious re-stamp.

If anyone has seen anything different than this, I would like to know.

I bought, and have since sold, the block, heads, and intake from a '74 SD auto.

Block: Y8, dated C294, VIN 24N163148
Heads: dated F163 and F233
Intake: LS2X, dated E134

Just an FYI.

Sorry on the 495170 #-----My Typo.
So do all the 73 intakes have all raised letters then?

Looks like I need to find a correct 73 intake. I got this early 74 one to trade......... any one have one to sell or trade?

x-bird2:

My 74 LS2X intake is the same as the one Lloyd just sold. It has a casting date of E134 and as I stated earlier has a fully cast PN.

FTR: This is a great topic. I just love learning new stuff about the SD engine.

none of the 73s to my knowledge should/will have a full cast part number. no one that i know of has yet to appear with or prove the existence of a pre-emissions change SD equipped car. the original number was superseded by 494405 after "flunking" the emissions certification, which was prior to any of the cars being sold. the changes to the intake to make it comply meant that it had to be treated/identified as a new part that conformed to testing levels. for 73, there's a mix of either fully stamped (like mine), or partially stamped where the original "49" was not wiped off. When i started chasing after one of these in the early 90s (took me 'til 98 to come up with one i could afford), the amount of unknown and misinformation on them was quite a lot and much of it accepted as gospel. threads like these, multiple interviews with those involved by a variety of writers etc. have really brought a lot to light in the past ten years.--and some of it even from the insiders involved with the whole deal is conflicting and often a not too pleasant subject for them to discuss.

I decided to look at my car and this is what I found. My VIN is 121,XXX and has a build date of 12C.
Heads: G143 and F233
Block: A093
Intake: G193

I had the opportunity to look at another SD engine with a VIN of 123,XXX.
Heads: K282 and G143
Block: A093
Intake: K172 with the stamped 495107.

Both have numbers matching blocks and to the best of my knowledge have never had the heads/intake replaced.

74SDFormula,

There was some overlap on the casting dates when both early and later parts were being used. I am a little surprised to see the G193 intake used this early.

Did you get the 12C build date from the cowl tag? If so, this is the date the body was assembled (spot welded) and is usually 1-3 weeks before the car is built on the assembly line. Most likely your car was built in early January 74 as the factory would have shut down for the holidays. The most accurate info on build date is found on the invoice. It will show the exact date shipped, which is when the car left the assembly plant.

It is also unusual to have mixed dates on the heads, but I have seen it before.

toomanybirds,

Yes, I did get the build date of 12C from the cowl tag. From looking at the PHS I see that the "DATE SHIPPED" is 01-08-74, "DATE OF MOVE" is 01-14-74, and the "INTEREST FROM" is 02-03-74.

I haven't digested all of the numbers in the last few posts, but here's what I can add to the conversation.
I have an early 74 SD Formula 11C 115XXX. It has the following components:
Intake; 495107 LS2X G193.
Heads; #16 J182 & K282.
Block; Y8 (MUN) 130XXX 490132 K112.
Exhaust Manifolds; 490803 LH K222. 490802 RH K222.
Dist; 1112205 2L28.
Carb; 7044270 SF 2043.
Starter; 1108430 3B13.
Other than the starter, do these numbers make sense?
