Does anybody have a part number or some way I can locate the appropriate bulb for the courtesy light in a '68 convertible?

The front ones or rear ones?

In the dash pad just above the radio. It's got its own switch and doesn't come on with the doors.

I searched everywhere for one with no success and even tried to fabricate one (with no success). I ended up buying a whole NOS unit with a bulb on Ebay for $40.

I think the guy who had it before me did some fabrication. I know I can get SOMEthing to work but I want it to look as stock as possible from the outside. The previous bulb was too big and started to slightly melt the lens. Fortunately you can't see it unless you really look for it. I can't believe that GM would use a weird, non-standard bulb but I've looked a bit and can't seem to find anything.
Mine is definitely manually switched. I think I might rewire it to come on when the doors open. That way it might actually get used. |

Hi,
Our host, PY, sells them. See page 10 of the 2007 catalog. Mike

I found a correct bulb at AutoZone but I don't recall the part number. Mine comes on with the door switches but I can't get the switch to have any effect? Anyone know how it's supposed to be wired?

C'mon guys, this was a BATTLE Royale a few months ago....
http://forums.maxperformanceinc.com/...courtesy+light okay, maybe it didn't get that out of hand but there were definitely two teams here! |

Based on the wiring diagrams, it doesn't LOOK like it should come on with the doors, it draws power off the Bat line and the switch grounds it. I've got a 68 dash harness in front of me as well and I don't see any wiring that connects the door jamb switches to the area where the light would be. There is a orange black right there where it would pull 12v from just like the wiring diagram says it is. Now that's not to say there wasn't a second wire off the right side door switch that could have jumped back to the light and the map light switch isolated the grounding points so as not to turn the dome light on when the map light was lit backfeeding the ground through all the courtesy lights.
NOW the only problem is my impressionable mind is sure my 68 used to light up with the doors open and when I parted the car, here's the harness, so where's the magic ground wire from the doorjamb switches to the light? So what am I missing here? I love a good mystery...it's better than going outside and grinding on rusty fenders! |

Well hell, I didn't mean to reignite a burning controversy or reopen old wounds! All I know is that I've damn near got my dash back in order and all I lack is the glovebox and the courtesy light. I can almost drive without embarrassment!

I know the 68 owners manual didn't have (or it was wrong??) bulb # for it. Anyone recall the #?

OK let me (try) to explain this. First my courtesy (map) lite comes on when the doors open if the switch on the lite is in the forward position (towards front of the car) as well as the threshhold lites. They also come on if the switch on the light is moved to the rear. And if the headlight switch is turn to the left.
The lite has two wires going to it, one is a org. with two black stripes which is the 12v hot coming from the fuse box. The other is wht with a black stripe which is coming from the door jam switches through the headlamp switch. It is the ground. So when the doors open, headlight sw. is turned or the switch on the courtesy lite is activated it connects the wht. wire to ground and turns on the lite. The hot to the lite is always on as opposed to other lites in the car. Wen the sw. on the lite is forward the ground is isolated, and when it is moved rearward it connects to grd. by way of the mounting screw. My bulb reads GE50
