You definately want to go with a "baffled" pan.....I think ALL pontiac V8's got them after 75.

Pre-74 valve covers are needed....75 and newer had spotwelded drip rails which will not clear your bolt on baffles...

Going from memory, the first baffled 2nd Gen T/A oilpans came out in '73. The '73 model pan has the small center hole & two slots like the right hand one in Bob's pic. believe that style rear seal was also used in '74.

A Pontiac engine builder I supplied 400 cores to for many years never liked that rear seal arrangement, he preferred the later pan with multiple slots (non baffled or the baffled oil pan) or the '72 & earlier oilpans with no slots. A '72 oil pan is same as '70-72 & in a '72 HO engine will run the 455 version of the short windage tray.

The '72's are same as '71's. When I had the 400 core program going, I usually pitched the later '70's valve covers with spotwelded drippers. Now if they were W72 flashchomes, I kept them

Bill, are any of your undented oil pans for sale?

Here's a picture of the inline tube pan. Looks like it may be the same part as Ames. Has the same oil drain detail and indicates the baffle is part of the pan.

That pre-heater shroud appears to be the late '72 455 HO version. The car looks to be a January '72 build and that shroud would probably be correct for that date. That same type of shroud was used on the '73-'74 SD 455's.

thanks for the info, that was something i did not know. i thought all H.O. car's used the same folded/welded type of shroud....

Hi,

I just bought a 72 455 H.O. GTO (WW5 car) and it has an inner and an outer shroud. The outer shroud is the angular version (car is a November 71 build). I've never seen the inner shroud before. Does anyone else have one?

Yes the 3 that I have are all non dented. They are good usable pieces.I need to keep one for my 71 HO, but will be more than happy to sellyou one. Send me a PM and we can work something that is fair.

and my are 70/71 units, the drain hole doesn't look like the picture you posted. they look like bob's beat up one. plus I have the original oil fill bolts ..

I like it...........ALL the important stuff appears to be there....other than the clutch pedal.

You can't tell where the primer ends and surface rust starts.....

Love the picture in the barn with CRAP piled on it........it reminds me of MY barn......

I don't know '72's very well, heck I can't even say I know 71's that well. I only had to ask about 600 questions here.

I was wondering about the double alternater pulley???

The AC compressor & brackets are gone , that'll cost ya. Not the end of the world, but pricy. Maybe the guy has them in a box.

I would want to see more.

I don't know if they are exactly the same, but they are being marketed as the same product by the aftermarket people. The squared off, sharp angled shroud used on the Ram Air IV, and '71 and early '72 HO's was replaced by the version pictured above sometime in1972. The SD 455 shroud appears to be the same as the late HO version. It had to be a little bigger because the SD exhaust manifolds are slightly larger than the RA IV and HO manifolds.

Thanks for this post. It may save somebody some grief. I almost bought a set of those for my '71 HO a few years back thinking they were right. Thanks to you guys, I didn't. I've seen vendor catalogs list these later style heat shrouds as correct for both year 455HO's.

Nice to know that only the really late build '72 HO's had this kind on them and that the earlier '72 HO's had the same as the '70 RA IV & '71 HO. That clears up a lot for owners of both year models. Good information for everybody.

My January build HO lemans has the original squared off shroud.
