Hello All,
I am new to this site after having purchased the following 1970 Firbird listed here: http://forums.maxperformanceinc.com/...d.php?t=536800 I am sure I will have lots of questions and will try to answer any if I am able as I re-build this. This is my second 1970 Eprit, the first one lost to collission damage many years ago. My question is this car came without keys, so thats my starting point. After looking at some websites that offer these I cannot find someone that sells a complete set to re-key the entire car. I need the ignition, door locks, glove and trunk. Many sites offer a combination of these but not the whole set. I did see one set on ebay available through a locksmith. Another problem I see is some sites offer sets that seem to be keyed wrong (or at least the descriptions provided make me think that). Which keys match which locks? Ignition/doors & trunk/glove? If I know for sure, then I can buy the individual sets. My other option is to try getting a locksmith to make new keys, butthen I run the risk of finding out I have bad locks anyways. Any direction or suggestions on this? Thanks! - webrunner |

Give our hosts (Performance Years) a call.
They specialize in complete, original-style lock cylinders and keys. Good luck, and welcome aboard!

The locks have the key code stamped on the side of them. Take off a door panel, remove the clip that retains the lock and remove it from the door. The dash glove box lock can be removed to expose the key code by sliding a pick or peice of welding filler wire in the key opening and pressing down on the silver tumbler with another pick or wire.
Take those codes to a locksmith or GM dealer and you can get some new keys. The doors and ignition are the square key and the glovebox and trunk are the oval key in 1970.

Doh!
I completely forgot about the key codes on the invoice, and that they're stamped onto the lock cylinders themselves. Thanks for reminding me, Dennis and James!

On a car of that age & condition,I would just buy a NEW set of door locks with a matching ignition lock from Performance Years & take your trunk lock & glovebox lock into a locksmith & have them make you a key.
Your door lock cylinders are likely already mismatched OR worn out & there is NO guarantee that newly cut keys from codes will work properly or AT ALL in 35 year old locks. MY 2 cents! |

Thanks for the responses.
I was leaning towards new just for that reason. After getting any re-keyed, I would risk some not working. I'll look here at PY for the locks. -webrunner |

Here's the key codes on a PHS doc. However, I went to the effort of getting an ignition key cut to my code , it won't work !!!!!! Regards Bruce.
