ok update on problem. seems to be corrected at this point. had it running last night for about 30 min and running around 170. bottom line i think that replacing radiator, flushing the block ,and advanceing the timing to around 15 initial corrected the problem.(so far anyway ) thanks for all the replys that helped me correct this problem. jeff

Jeff-

sounds like you solved your cooling probs, but i'm wondering how you are setting your timing?

are you setting your timing based on idle? perhaps would be better to determine what timing your motor likes > 3,000 rpm with a load, then work backwards. AFTER you set timing with a load & RPMs, if your timing at idle is not what the motor likes, then maybe need to recurve. also, sounds like your vacuum advance is not working properly. are you checking your timing with vacuum advance hooked up or not? a great discussion and tips on how to dial in timing for your car is in detail in Jim Hand's book on how to build a Pontiac engine.

also, did you put a thermostat back in the car? a little counter-intuitive, but some people actually cool better with a thermostat installed, and i think your motor will thank you in the long run for the faster warm-up.

Scott.

scott . hose was off advance and yes iam setting timing with car at idle. iam sure there are more accurate ways of doing it. i will look in the jim hand book for his procedure. advance does seem to be working as i can see the timing go up when i rev the motor. i put a 160 back in along with 50/50 antifreeze mix. jeff

I set my initial timing with a vacuum guage instead of a light. It has given me the best results and you don't have to be at a certain idle speed while adjusting.
