Hi everyone,
I going to remove my driveline this winter and I am just gathering info.,as I have not done this in close to 30 years. Do I need a special tool to remove the pilot bushing ? How is it done? Also would you replace it with a bearing or go back with a bushing? Where can I get one also? Thanks, Dave

Never use a pilot bushing in a Pontiac engine. The bearing is available at any good parts store. The BCA # is 7109.

Dave: There is a special tool. Here is a pic of one. I also used a bearing when replacing..

Same ??? as Murf's Dad.
Why not use a bushing? What does BCA mean? Also is there a name for that tool? Can I rent at a parts store? Thanks, Dave |

Dave: The bearing is a sealed pre greased bearing and my thoughts are that it will last longer, and is stronger.
BCA, I believe is a standard. BEARING CORPORATION OF AMERICA. Like CSA is Canadian Standards Association. The tool is called a 3 Jaw bearing puller or pilot bearing puller. I think it cost under $20.. I bought it here in Canada at Princess Auto.. Charles |

I've use that puller from Harbor Freight to pull my old bearing. My car came with a bearing stock if my memory serves me.

Stewart: I used it to pull mine as it was a bushing. I then installed a new bearing.
I'm going to edit as you just posted..lol My stock one was a bushing.. Charles |

I haven't pulled a '70's manual trans Pontiac apart, but I have never seen one with a bushing from the factory, I've had probably 30+ apart, they all came with bearings.

I have used the Bearing type Pilot in the past (in the early days) and hammered a couple of the bearings with powershifting, (the bearings would no longer turn smoothly).
When I went to a Lakewood Scattershield I also used the "block saver" plate so that spaced the input shaft the thickness of the plate farther out too. At that point I went to a machine shop with some bronze "oilite" material and had them turn me a few of the bushings that were the same OD (+.0005) and ID except now the bushing length was longer. I have never hurt the transmission input bearing since but I did hurt it with the original bearing type input shaft bearings. The bushing will take a lot of abuse with at best very slight distortion (enlarging of the hole). JMO Tom V.

The rear main of the crank is supported very well (very wide bearing). No bushing if centered on the centerline of the crankshaft and the transmission will put a thrust on the crankshaft. Therefore the "thrust" you refer to must be in a front to rear motion. If the bushing is installed correctly (where the transmission input shaft has clearance between it and the bushing (at the large splined area) then there should be no thrust there either. Can you explain further? Like to hear the reason why. Tom V.

If there was no reason, why did Pontiac spend the extra money for 28 years, to use bearings instead of bushings? Many Chevy racers use to machine their cranks to accept bearings.
