After the new transmission (Doug Nas 5 Speed), and now I have a line on a 2nd gen T/A
rear with a 3.08 posi I am thinking that the stock 350 is really lame... I'm just wanting to have some fun while my other motor is being built. It doesn't have to last long either. So for now I would love to enjoy a tad more power out of the good ole 350. I was thinking a 068 cam would be great, however I ran across the summit dual pattern cam shafts and was wondering about them. I've read some decent reviews of them so I thought that I might give one of them a shot. However one question still remains... how much lift can a 350 handle? I'm worried about the valves hitting the deck or is that mostly on big valve heads? I'm really looking at the summit K2800 cam, I really wonder if I am going to need to replace the valve springs? I most likely will have to... If i do, Oh well, not a biggie, I've just never done them with the heads still on the motor. The cam specs are as follows: 112 LSA 262 int/272exh duration 420int/442 exh lift How is this going to sound at idle? pretty mild or will it have some lope to it? The other choice would be the K2801 which has a bit more duration and lift. I know it would "sound" better but I have to be realistic as well... It's a stock motor with #17 heads, 1970 4bbl intake, random rebuilt Q-jet, and 4 tube headers.... Thanks! |

With the nash and 3.08's in the back you have the effective gearing of a normal 4 speed and 4.33's depending on tire size.. Personally I'd do the bigger 2801 and maybe advance it 2 degrees... Just my 2 cents worth.. It should run damn good....

The 2800 will work perfectly with your setup and compression. Usually when you do the camshaft the springs should be changed as well.

That is what I was thinking, but I don't want to kill things... Since the 350 is stock on the inside. It was rebuilt just before I got the car with decent stuff and TRW forged pistons, new valvetrain stuff etc.
Yes, valve springs will be replaced... just never done it on the car before. |

The Mellings version of the 068 is great cam choice for near-stock 350, advance it 4 degrees.

The Summit 2800 is a decent cam for a 350. It's definitely an upgrade from the crummy factory cam. At roughly $100 it's an especially nice upgrade if the motor isn't going to be in the car much longer. The 2801 is too much for a low comp 350. I've seen a lot of guys run that cam in other makes of 350's and have issues with being dead on low end. I have seen the 2801 being used in bone stock bigger engines with some success. I've considered it for a low comp 455 buildup if I can't find a set of heads better than the stock 4X's at a decent price.
Both of these cams are generic grinds. The technology used to develop them is a little outdated. There are superior grinds. Crane makes a Powermax series that will yield better results. I've heard good things about Engle cams as well. People seem to like Comp Cams for Pontiac but I've never had too much luck with them myself. Problem is well you get what you pay for. Better brands are going to cost. The generic 204/214 cam(summit 2800 cam) starts to sound better for the price and considering the fact you intend to switch engines. |

I think I'll just got with the 2800 summit cam. It seems as though it's a good bang for the buck. I dont need or want anything exotic or modern even.

I'd use the 068 Melling cam with Rhoad's lifters. I put a package together for a guy with a '67 Le Mans with a .030 over 326/auto. It would break the tires loose from a punch at idle. He was tickled to death with it. I think it would work great in a 350. The 325 hp HO with a stick came with it so it's a proven combination. The Rhoads would help to compensate for the lower compression ratio of your heads.

Your heads give you a compression ratio between 8.6 and 9 to 1 depending on type of milling done to them and head gasket used.
In my experience, the 2800 is good as a tomato stick and that's about it. The Melling SPC-7 (068 replacement) advanced 4 degrees works very well in this application. You can use the 1.6 roller rockers or roller tip rockers and not worry about valve springs. |

the summit 2800 2801 and 2802 are just as good as any of the other cams out there they are made by comp i believe.

The Summit cams are not from Comp. They like a large number of off the shelf everyone has their version of this cam is ground usually in Michigan, then the cams are put in color coded wire crates, and shipped to whoever is boxing them. A few years ago, I went with my brother who drives otr, and we picked up 28 wire crates of cams. We made our first stop in Memphis at Comp. Second stop was Lunati, then we went to Fl. to anonther cam company in Daytona Beach, said Crane on the building. It was fun to watch the stamping process and boxing by each company. About 3-4 weeks later everyone was having a sale on the 214/224 grind type cam profiles. Funny how that happened.

Lunati 10704, stock springs and low low compression work well. Sounds great, works good for what it is. I got mid 14's with a stock converter @ 96 mph in a 200K mile 7.6:1 compression 350 and 73 Bird. Easy 13 second ride but my short times where 2.5+ seconds, talk about hard to get a good reaction time.
Stock 46 or 47 (can't remember) heads with original tired springs. Stock 4 bbl iron intake, divider removed, w/ holley 650 4 tube 1 3/4" Heddman's with dual 2 1/4" and cheap turbos. 3.42 gears, radials, stock suspension, no traction devices. Stock converter TH 350 It's 220/228 @ .050", 110 LSA + 4, .424/.424" lift |
