That is Houston. It was called Freeway Drag strip, at that time, I believe.

I'm the one with the small (Cushman motorscooter front wheels and hubs, with ribbed "high-speed" boat trailer tires).

Directly behind me is Rodney Singer. I think he was from the Houston area.

Buggs Threadgill is the second car over, on the front row. He was from around Houston, too.

The beautiful full-bodied Chrysler that is showing sideways on the third row is Bobby Langley of Everman, Texas.

That car of mine was the world's quickest and fastest unblown gasser, and later, with a 6-71 GMC blower, we made the biggest improvement ever in the NHRA ET record. We dropped the record from 9.40 to 8.84. "First in the Eights on gas"
Very light car-- 1094 pounds, if I remember right. And that was with iron block and heads!

Seems like a long time ago!!

Ben D'Pietro, circa 63/64 from Popular Hot Rodding Magazine, May 1964. Benny ran a 52 Kaiser Henry J in A/Gas with Pontiac Power. It had a 62 or 63 SD 421 bored or stroked (or both) to 440 c.i. He ran a Racer Brown roller cam with perhaps Jahns pistons and Hilborn injection. Car had a B&M Hydrostick cast iron 4 speed automatic with 33 Studebaker front end and 57-64 Pontiac Olds rear. I believe he used to match race a blown Vette. They used to give the Vette the head start. Bennie was still into cars as of May 2007, alive and well in his 80's. This car and some of the motor stuff was floating around the Mass/RI area in the early to mid 80's. There was a finned aluminum valley cover installed after this picture. Oddly enough, the finned valley cover was raised and flat on top and would clear very few induction systems. With the Hilborn, you had to mill out the fins under the barrel valve bracket to clear!

Interesting old Henry-J. That's a first for me- seeing big holes cut out of a bumper- presumably to lighten it? That's a neat plumbing job to take the water from the fronts of the heads back to the radiator.

Note- this is a different car than the M/T Pontiac HEMI digger that won Indy that year. There were 2 ( at least ).

couple photos from my local area, These are pics of a couple of Dave Flynn's rides (RIP Dave!) first one is a 60 Pontiac ran in K/SA in 1967, and the 66 GTO pic is from late 70's, BTW this 66 GTO is the same car now owned by PY member Jeff Verdi, except now it's Gold and pull monster wheelstands!

I've got a question for some of you guys who raced back in the 60's. If you had 65 GTO with the original engine, automatic tranny, running cheater slicks, but running an aluminum intake and 2x4's; what class would it run. It was a factory 3x2 car. Would it have run in the SS classes or something different? If the 3x2 setup were left on it should have run in C/SA. Anyone have any ideas?

In AHRA it would have been either B/S-A Formula 1 or C/S-A Formula 1. Formula 2 was for the tri-power and Formula 6 was for a 4-barrel. I don't think NHRA allowed non-standard carburetion in stock classes. My guess is that it would have run in B-Gas in NHRA. I saw a guy run a '64 4-spd without his front bumper and they put him in A-Gas.

Hadn't NHRA already started the Modified-Production classes by then? I remember running M/P in '67, but can't remember just when they first had it. A lot better "fit" than Gas classes which allowed a lot of engine setback, etc.

We started running B/MP in 1967, which allowed the larger tripower, ram air, and larger tires on our '65 GTO, but I don't know what year the MP classes started.
