Is there anyway to tell if a bird was born a 400 car? As far as I know it just a bunch of trim pieces and a hood. I mean if you dont have a build sheet and/or a pontiac historic history paperwork on it how do you really know.

If you really are curious , get the PHS....
You wont really know otherwise... 400 emblems , hood , arrowhead on front bumper can all be 'fitted'......a 400 should also have (but also a 350 A/C car should) the X fillers, lower valance filler....

the car pictured is beautiful if its a factory 400 car should have twin scoop hood 400 grilles 400 arrow head on bumper 400 emblem on rh side trunk lid radiator filler panels , chrome wheel well moulding and chrome moulding down the rocker panels. That is a fine looking bird.

the lower valace filler is a flat piece with a short L, that fits under that same area at the bottom ,also to close off the air , making it go THRU the radiator , not being able to go around...you`ll also have some 'masticated' or rubber fillers at ea end at the bottom of the radiator...those three items were on 400`s AND A/C cars

400 cars also had a chrome strip in the middle of the grilles. (Kinda like a 69 GTO)

I like the late model mirrors and Pontiac wheels! Nice color too. What kind of seats do you have? They look to have a high back(comfortable!)design. My avatar shows the scoops you should have. PHS, they'll let you know...

Do not the 400s have a larger fuel line?

Yes they have a return line. I do believe Rochester carbs use that to keep the fuel cooler to prevent vapor lock.

I found out that my bird was a 400 4-spd just by reading the data plate. You can enter that info on the www.firstgenfirebird.com website and it will tell you this and some more. I did also send in my info to get the PHS documents to make sure as they mentioned above. Jason.
