Is the 4-speed gear shifter the same as a 3-speed gear shifter for a 64 Catalina? My 4-speed shifter needs to be replaced and I have located a 3-speed shifter. Help!! Thank you.

4 speed shifter controls three arms on the side of the tranny. 3 speed shifter controls two.

Send it to Hurst to get rebuilt or contact Peter Serio (sp). I believe he post here. He wrote a very nice and informative book on the Hurst shifters.

have tried contacting hurst [mr gasket] directly? iirc, the competition plus unit will replace the oem shifter on those cars.
either of the rebuild options above are good choices also. mike

You are talking about a floor shifter for a manual transmission? Depending on whether you had a Catalina or a Bonneville, there were three and four speed automatic transmissions that year with column shifters...the column shift components for the autos are the same, but there are probably some differences in linkage underneath the car that connects to the transmission.

If it is the original (not Hurst) shifter, it may be the same or similar as a 63 Vette.
I have a 64 2+2 4 speed with the original shifter in my shop right now and Pete Serio could not rebuild it.

Fabcraft has the 4 speeds w/ Hurst components.
If I remember right there are a couple of different 3 speeds. There is an HD and a regular. The shop manual shows a Pic of one that has a feature in the linkage that mine does not have. I posted here trying to find out what the difference was. Archives might have some Pics.
