I've got a complete non-running PWH 400, I believe it's a 79. I took the heads off and the cylinders look good. I was just curious as to what price I should ask for this engine.

700-900 depending on how complete the engine is. I just sold a long block for $750. No carb, distributor, oil pan or timing cover. If you have all the numbers matching accessories then $900 for rebuildable engine is fair.


BTW, I know of someone needing one. PM me if you decide to let her loose.


Also, PM me the VIN. I'd love to find my original block for my 79 Formula. I know it's a long shot but I gotta ask..

Give me a day or so and I'll get the vin to you. I believe everything but the carb is original to the motor. What parts are serialized to the motor?

Wow.......Maybe I need to be buying up all the ones I see around here and start shipping them to Florida.
I would imagine that it depends on where you live and the demand for them. Around here its fairly common to buy them complete for under $500 and have bought them as cheap as $175.

I was thinking around $500, but it would for sure be worth much, much more to someone who is restoring a 79 T/A four speed car thats missing the original engine. Possibly over $1000?

to a guy that just going to put it in a GTO, of some other Pontiac they probably won't car what the numbers are. Still a harder engine to find complete & matching, thats for sure.

Colin, is there that many wrecked 79 400 4 speed TA's/Formula's up there? The 79 PWH code blocks are fairly hard to find. IIRC, the last complete one I saw on Ebay went for around $900. That was the high water benchmark I use for my figures.


Redbird, the only real numbers that matter would be the carb (17059263) and the distributor (1103315).

Well, the carb doesn't match. I think it's the original carb to my car which is a 77 t/a. 17057274 with a date code of I067. I have to find the distributor number.

I don't know where the numbers are on the distributor. Are there numbers on the timing cover?

Oh Im sure they will sell that high to someone that MAY be looking for that particular block. How many people are looking for a PHW block specifically? Im not really into the matching #'s thing so to me a 400 is a 400 is a 400 I cant imagine the demand for that certain one is all that great........I have been known to be wrong many times before though.
Like 68ragtop posted, most people probably dont care what numbers (or letters) are on it.

BTW, didnt mean to come across as a jerk or anything. I suppose that if you hang on to it the right person could come around and pay a premium for it to have a numbers matching car.
Seems to me that parts prices on Ebay are kind of sporadic. I have seen items that were virtually identical sell for very different prices........its all in what someone is willing to pay for it I guess.

Colin, I read your post and didn't think it was rude at all. I agree, in most cases people are just looking for a 400. The kicker here is that the 79's are the last ones and only available with the 4 speed. Plus it's a one year only code, unlike other codes that was used extensively over the years. The car, with a replacement PWH, won't be numbers matching anyway but at the very least have the correct year block. It might add a few dollars when it comes to sell it.



Aaron, at first glance the dates look ok. I'll post the date codes from mine this evening and compare them. The distributor part number is located on the outside of the upper part of the housing.

BTW, I forget to mention the intake part number (10003395)

The numbers matching thing doesn't matter to me either. This motor isn't original to my 77, so it's worth more to me to sell it. I have several other 400's laying around and it'll cost the same for me to rebuild them as this one. I'm just hoping to get enough out of it to buy some of the other stuff I need. I'll go look at the intake number. I think the exhaust manifolds are probably the ones that came with my car. It's a late 77 T/A, but the rest does look right for the motor.

I was one of those people looking for a PWH engine mine was trashed in my 79 Y84/W72 I found one on ebay complete minus carb and exh manifolds for 255.00.

I agree. And it`s one of the few blocks that has the late 2 hole motor mount pattern, that`s not weak. It has the `74 casting with the "XX" identifyer.

Dave, the quote is a taken out of context. We were talking about the other part numbers other than the block, heads and intake. (exhaust manifolds withstanding)

For the purpose of selling a complete engine those are the numbers that matter. Now if your restoring one that's a whole different ball game when matching up date codes to the build date of the car.
