When you finished teaching this kid a lesson by beating him up or whatever, later on down the road he might just come wipe out your whole family with an AR-15 some night when they are all sleeping. Had a kid 20 years ago in our neighborhood everyone decided to torment cause he was a trouble maker to everyone, then one weekend over 15 dogs died from poisoning one weekend. Never proved it was him, but everyone knew it was.

Doorbell ditching, burning dog crap and eggs on a door are minor and even if you catch him in the act the cops aren't gonna do much to a 13 year old thats doing that(I did those things every Halloween night when I was a kid). Get that kid really pissed off and he might burn your house down with everyone in it one night.

There are tons of cheapo surviellance cams on E-bay, I was looking for a nanny cam not too long ago and saw them. Some even have IR illuminators for recording in the dark.
I would get the little punk a few times before calling the cops though.

I had problems with kids driving their ATV's on my property not too long ago but that was solved with a little friendly persuasion --a cell phone camera for the cops to see and some steel spikes.

Default trouble

If he is truely home alone that much call child protective services every other day have others in the family do it. The mother will not like the heat and take care of him for you. Just my 2 cents.

Default Just a suggestion.....

You might go get you a new "welcome" door-mat that is made out of thin carpet or astro turf. Then get you a piece of 1/2" plywood that is exactly the same size as the mat. Carefully drive a 100 or more 2 1/2" long "un-galavanized" nails through the plywood. Place the "welcome" mat on top of the plywood and slide it out far enough out that he'll need to step on it to reach the door-bell button or entice him with a pretty, new flower arrangement-wreath mounted securely on the door. Be sure to put a "no-trespassing" sign at the end of your sidewalk.
Usually this level of pain will cause him to think twice about retalliation.
We had a 'window" peeper at some apartments years ago that would jump the 6' high wooden fences that surrounded the sliding-glass doors and patio area. He would land quietly and then enjoy the next few moments staring into people's living rooms. He always did this very late at night. With a 4 X 8 sheet of plywood and several hundred rusty old nails and some old carpet; we decided it was pay-back time. It was especially satisfying to hear we had "nailed" him at 2:30 in the morning.
Usually it takes this kind of action to get your point across to people that your family is sacred and should not be tampered with. While to some this may sound a little extreme; they need to remember that this is your daughter he's chosen to single out. So there will be very extreme consequences for him to deal with.
BTW, I'm very sorry to hear about your divorce.

Default Everyone take a deep breath

Ask the police for extra patrol. If you let the cops know that you're tired of the kid enough....they'll get tired of hearing it from you and do their best to get it stopped. Also, without buying any camera equipment, hiring neighborhood kids to assault him, etc., you could look into the possibility of filing a harassment/restraining order against him. Talk civily to your local copper, I'm sure they have a more civil suggestion. There may also be mediation services available through the local police department. Many jurisdictions have this option in order to handle civil matters between neighbors so that problems can be solved without having to get the whole damn world involved.

We are just talking about vandalism here also, doesn't sound like there's been a lot of damage to property. Most kids do this because they love the reaction they get. If everytime something happens an argument between the mom's breaks out and the cops get called, he's getting his entertainment. If he's home alone a lot, then he's seeking attention anyway he can get it, from whomever will provide it. Try ignoring the ding dong ditch for awhile, see if it doesn't have an impact.

And why in the hell is everyone in such a hurry to get a lawyer involved and file a lawsuit???? Isn't that part of the problem with the direction our country is going in the first place???? Everyone always wants to sue this, sue that all the time!!!! Is what is occurring sad. Absolutely!! Is it worthy of a lawsuit?? Not a chance!!!

My $.02

Unfortunatly that is your only recourse in todays world. Until it hurts this kids mother she will NOT stop defending her bratt. She has no insentive to stop it. parents today are afraid to discipline there kids. the teachers have the kids buffalowed in to thinking If your parents touch you have them thrown in jail. The juvenal crime problem is caused by your way of thinking .IMO. Back when I was a kid the only thing that kept me out of jail was the FEAR of my dad finding out and tearing the skin off my butt with his belt. Now the little yard apes might get an hour of HUG therapy.

Dogs CAN get you in trouble unless the little creep is INSIDE your house when the dog ripps his head off.

There is NOTHING in any statute anywhere that says parents can't discipline there kids. Nothing more than what was on the books back in the 60's, 70's, 80's or otherwise. The problem is parents and just about everyone else is dooped by the media into believing there is this massive movement by the courts to completely eliminate any and all discipline by parents. That is absolutely false. If you've ever been involved in the legal system, the first thing you'll find is that a great majority of cops are normal, everyday rational thinkers who believe in parents disciplining their kids. The problem is parents are now using the excuse that "the courts will just throw me in jail if I discipline my kids" attitude. That is a knee jerk reaction that is just false. And most judges are TOO hesitant to take any action to step in on family matters, often times leaving kids with parents who are unfit.

I don't know this mother or how she operates. Obviously there are some issues there, but it's NOT always the parents fault, either. My guess is that it is in this case though. But, considering mom's attitude, how is a drawn out court case going to improve anything?? It won't, in fact it will only serve to make matters worse and increase the tension between the two house holds.

Teens are teens. They are cruel, immature, cocky and believe they can say and do no wrong. Usually the only thing that changes that is time and life experience. You can beat that kid all you want, it's probably not going to change his demeanor or his outlook on what he does.

I have been through the court system with my X over discipline of my son. Child services is a funny thing. They think mothers can do no wrong and fathers are monsters. A counselor told me once that my son felt he was not in control of his life...DUH.. he's 14 he's not in control of his life the parents are! They said if he doesn't do what you tell him to CALL the cops. Every time the government gets involved with ANYTHING they go compleatly over the edge. If you ever had to deal with child services you would know that THEY ARE INSAINE. My lawyer found the law that said you can hit your kids as long as you don't leave brueses broken bones or draw blood. child services said they didn't care about that law they should be able to take him away from me anyway. Thankfully I got a judge that has teenagers. But it still cost me $6.000 in leagle fees.

Sleepy,

I feel for you there. The child protection system is certainly not perfect, and I would tend to agree that the criminal justice system overall is somewhat slanted against males. With that in mind however, that is also part of my point with the lawsuit issue. I don't see a need to get lawyers and everyone and their brother in on it. Getting a harassment/restraining order does not require the family to hire a lawyer. It also MIGHT NOT be warranted/or granted in this case. However, if an order were granted and the harassment continued, then the neighbor could be charged with a violation, thus moving him into the juvenile detention system where he would have to answer to someone, whether its a judge, parole officer or someone else.

All of that might also be avoided by not giving the kid the attention he's looking for in the first place. Odds are if his behavior is ignored (as hard as it is), he'll move on and find something else. I'm also not saying it's a cure for the kids stupidity, but odds are time will heal that. I would guess based on my experience that a good majority of people reading this, might have done some stupid and inconsiderate things as a juvenile. I would also say that most of us also look back on things we did and shake our heads and hope that our kids don't follow in our foot steps.

Anyway, good luck and I hope the issue at hand gets resolved.

Well, it's been a few days since the little bastard has caused any trouble. Between me putting the fear of god in him and the police talking to him, I'm hoping this whole thing starts to die down now. A friends son also had a little talk with him too if you know what I mean. Will keep you guys posted if anything changes and thanks again for all of the ideas.

I have a cousin who works for the welfare department in a small town in West Va. She came to me bragging one day saying that she looked out her office window and saw a mother smack her child across his mouth. She called downstairs and had the child taken away from the mother and put into custody. Sometimes an open handed smack in the mouth is what a child needs. Yuo just can't ever hit a child because you are mad. The only time my children ever got spanked is if they deserved to be spanked, and they defied me when I told them to stop. Not because they made me mad.
Back to this kid: In the neighborhood that I grew up in there was a group that was about 5 years younger than me. They were mostly into drugs. They used to hang out late into the night under a street lamp up the street from my parent's house. The neighbor across the street started calling the police and harassing the kids. He would stand out and have shouting matched with them and threaten them. Well he went on vacation for a week one time and when he got home his house was destroyed. They broke into it and graffiti'd and tore up everything inside the house. He could never prove it was them that did it and he eventually had to move since the kids wouldn't let up on him. Be very careful how you handle this. You aren't always home and he can do a lot of stuff while you're away. I have no idea how to tell you to handle this situation. Since it's your daughter that's getting the harassment something has to be done. Good luck.
