Default Tail light question on a 64

Should all 3 of the bulbs light up on each tail light when the lights are turned on or just the center one? Also, which two bulbs on each side light up for turn signals and brake lights?
Thanks
Jeff

All three on normally, outside ones for bright filaments (brakes, turn signals).

All three (on each side) light up when the head lights are turned on. The outside ones flash when the directional is turned on. Not sure on on brake lights since it was just me in the garage. And I did this with the key only turned to accessory - too late to crank it over. Though I doubt there'd be any difference.

I'm not exactly sure how you are describing this, but the center bulb on each side is a single filament. Two of the three (both outsides on each side) go bright with brakes or turn signals.

Poorly worded I suppose. Sorry 'bout that. But I had meant what you said too.

The center bulb burns brightly, as it is a single filament, as OMT said. Each of the outside bulbs is a dual filament bulb. When the headlights are on, the center bulb burns and the two outside dual filament bulbs burn on the less bright filament. When the turn signal or brake lights are activated the two outside brighter filaments light up on each tail light.

When the headlights only are on, all three bulbs in each tail lamp should be the same brightness. When the brakes or directionals are on, the outside two of the three are brighter. If the center bulb is brighter than the outside two, you have the wrong bulb in the center position. It should be a single filament bulb #1156. This would match the outside dual filament bulbs #1157. The original bulbs for the '64 GTO were #1037 for the dual filament and #1056 for the single filament. There is a newer dual filamant bulb #2057 which will work, also, but may be brighter than the 1157 which is widely available.

the 1156 bulb of today which I don't know or can't remember if it has a higher wattage then it used too but the single tail light elemint of the 1157 is about 7.9 watts so the 1156 when installed looks like the center has a brake light on so I use a lesser wattage interior type bulb 97 that is around 8 watts the luminus on all three tail lights then appear the same .
