Default n00b assistance

Hey all, new to the site and the whole classic car thing. I think I might have a good deal in front of me, but I am not sure. A friend of mine has a 64 tempest that he is wanting to get rid of and is asking a grand for the car (1000.00).

What I know for sure: 4 door, 6 cyl, 2 speed, kinda beige in color, exterior is in fairly good shape, interior is close to perfect, everything is original. i think there is about 70k miles on the vehicle.

the passenger back window is messed up and the tranny seems to have just a bit of trouble going to the next gear (instead of hearing the rise, then fall of the rpm, it seems to go up and down a few times when it hits the next gear) which someone has said maybe vaccum something or other. the tranny doesnt seem bad and it is totally drivable. someone even mentioned that it could be from it sitting in the garage for over a year.

im pretty sure that im looking at one like scotzz: http://forums.maxperformanceinc.com/...8&d=1194918724

just curious if this is one of those deals that i should jump on. and, if so, your thoughts on what to do with it. i am up for dumping some cash into it for fun.

Welcome sydeburnz! A G-note seems like a great deal to me. Heck, a parts car might go for that. I'd pick it up myself if I had the room.

It's a great deal, if you will be satisfied with a 4-door.

Original and driveable with just 70K miles, for only a grand? Take it. If you're a scavenger you can make it back and then some on selling off the parts. If you're a purist, you can clean it up with a little work and keep it as original as possible. If you're a morphist, you could easily clone it and be happy with a "clone car". (Sounds like "clown car" to me ) In any situation, if you're ready to take it on as a hobby, and are truly interested, this is a great deal.

Like OMT said, if you will be happy with a 4 door car, jump on it. It actually could be a lot of fun, too. I'd change the transmission fluid and check the vacuum line leading to the vacuum modulator on the transmission. More than likely the fluid is a little low and/or it has some varnish buildup causing the slow shifting and flaring. If you take it somewhere to have the fluid changed, have them also do a band adjustment on the tranny, as torquing the bands to spec might also help. The cost of all of this is next to nothing. With only a grand in the car your mind is free to think of some pretty neat things to do with it, including a custom paint job if you so desire.

not to jump on your post but 4 dr cars are good deals and they are becoming more scarce then 2 dr and verts because so many have been parted out .I just picked up this 64 cat 4 dr .the neighbor wanted a grand for it .It's an original car with 107 k ,bought it and put it on the road 2 days later after changing the oil buffing it out and a good vacuum the old girl is far from perfect .but i've got more thumbs with this in the past week than I have with the GTOs. Have fun with the car that's what it's all about .
