turbo 400 crossmember mount direction?
Does it matter which way the actual crossmember is mounted direction wise (tranny support welded piece facing forward or rearward)? Either the welded mount faces towards the front or the other way around with it facing towards the rear. It actually fits either way with the crossmember I have.
With it facing towards the rear, the "U" shape portion in the crossmember partially covers a end pan bolt so im pretty sure it doesn't go that way, but on this particular car it was mounted this way when I took it off although im not sure if its correct. What is interesting is this particular crossmember the welded tranny support piece does not appear to be offset at all or as much offset like pictures ive seen. My TH400 in my 1979 TA is "tranny support welded piece facing forward"

The transmission mount tab should face towards the rear of the car. It will work turned 180 degrees but there is a small tang bolted to the drivers side crossmember tube that retains the speedometer cable.

After extensive internet image searching for undercarriage T400 cars it appears it does face rearward. I know with my original crossmember the pan bolt in question was accessible, but with this crossmember I have there is no way to get a socket on it between the crossmember and pan edge and I would have to use an open end wrench from the side to get the bolt loose.

your problem loosening teh pan bolt is just something you have to deal with. The rear facing tab is correct..

After several weeks of researching pictures of 1974 t400 cars the mount does indeed face forward (at least on 1974's it does). With it forward the end pan bolt of course is not a problem as the crossmembers u shape is under the driver shaft portion then. Of course mine is on backwards where it will stay until I have to remove the pan to change the filter which will probably be never....
