Default 4 speed conversion

Any advice on converting a 67 to a 4 speed? What kit to use as far as peddles, z-bar, etc. I'm going to put a Muncie behind the 400 I'm building. I currently have a TH 350, so I won't need to alter driveshaft, right? Car Craft converted a 69 camaro to a 5 speed (I think), but I can't find the article now. Any other good write-ups on the web anywhere? I already searched and read the stuff on here. Thanks

If you already have the TH-350 trans crassmember and driveshaft, you are ahead of the game.
Use the Firebird pedal kit from our sponsor or E-bay, same with z-bar. Put a ball stud on the side of the block and the bracket on the frame for the z-bar support.
The Hurst competition plus shifter should line up with the floor console hole in the trans tunnel.
Don't forget the pilot bushing in the back of the crank.
You won't regret the swap, I am getting ready to put my Muncie back in after 10+ years with the TH-350.
Good luck

You'll need to know what rear end gear ratio you have so you can get the right 1st gear trans ratio that works best. M20 is 2.52 which would require between 3.08 and 3.55 but probably 3.23 or 3.31 would be best. The m21 and m22 have 2.20 1st gear and you will need to go 3.55 or better and your gas mileage will really suffer on the highway.

I am in the process of collecting parts to do my 68 FB conversion. The pedals and clutch linkage parts are available after market but bell housing and flywheel you could probably get used at a fair price. The muncie is a direct bolt up and should give you the least headaches. if you were to use a super t-10 there are things you do different with the rods and shifter.

I think the 3.55 would work better with the m20 2.52 1st but that is only based on what I know from reading a bunch of threads here and on camaro.net. One thing for sure it would get you off the line quickly....

Techinically, I think you would want a numerically higher gear to run the m21 2.2 1st but anyone who actually has the 3.55 rear would proably be much better qualified to answer so I will defer to them.

I just switched my 67 over from TH-350 to M-20 ( 2.56 rear now but have 3.36 Posi to go in) One thing I found was that the frame side bracket for the z-bar is different for a 67 than a 68,69. It is shaped different and the mounting holes line-up different. I bought a repo that was suppose to fit 67 -69, but it did not line-up. I could have drilled new holes in my frame to make it fit, but I wanted to make it look correct. Your frame already has the holes for this bracket, and mine were also already threaded. I found a used 67 bracket and it bolted right up.
I used pedals, flywheel, and bellhousing off of E-bay
The speedometer cable is also routed different on a Firebird with a Muncie trans. My cable would not reach, so I started checking engine bay pictures whereever I could. I bought a 67 parts car that was a 4spd originally and noticed that were my speedo cable came out of the firewall on my auto car was different. The 4spd car had a rubber block off at the hole on the firewall and the speedo cable came out under the wiper motor. You should see a round place the size of a quarter on the firewall under the wipermotor on your car. It will not be drilled out, but is a "template" to drill it out.
My crossmember fit and so did my driveshaft. The shifter was also in the correct position in the Trans tunnel.
If you want any pictures just send me a PM and I will send them to you. I spent a lot of time gathering info on doing this changeover and everything went together great. I hope I can save you some time and trouble.

You guys didn't have to cut the hole in the tunnel larger? You used the hole for the automatic shift cable and grommet?

I did not have to cut any on the tunnel. The factory Auto hole fit perfect with the shifter, boot and retainer. I purchased a shifter boot, and retainer for a 67 and even the screw holes lined up for the retainer for the shifter boot.
