Which carb should this car have? I thought the 71 HOs with 4-speed all had the 7041273 carb which didn't have the booster rings on the primaries. It's hard to make out the number on the carb in the photo but it looks like 7041267...?

the 7041267 was the HO carb for non ram air manual shifts.the auto non ram air was 4071268.this carb had the same booster rings as the 273-270 carbs.alot of guys years ago bought the wrong carb for their car because people told them the 267 and 268's were wrong for their TA's.(i was one of them).

used on trans am's,formulas and lemans HO's without ramair.

Thanks for the clarification! I think I knew that difference at some point and just forgot it. The Ram Air makes the difference. My 71 455 HO GTO has factory Ram Air and M22 so that is why it has the 7041273 carb.

WARBIRD is correct. The Ram Air cars,which would be GTO's recieved the 7041270/273 and the non-RamAir cars,which is all Trans Ams, recieved the 7041267/268.'267's being the manual and '268's being the automatic.Yes, there has been a bit of confusion over this numbering of HO carbs.. Many ,many guys with Trans Ams went out and bought '270/273's thinking the same numbering system carried over from 1970, which it didn't..


As far as teh Formula on Ebay.. I am naturaLLY suspicious and am so with this car. '73 radiator support just doesn't make sense. Looks liek a nice car, but I am not sure I buy the "survivor" status that teh owner is so proud of.. Could be wrong, have been before, will be again...but just doesn't look like a true survivor to me.. looks like it has been in a number of shops over the years.which isn't bad, not at all.. just the owner is advertising it as such a "survivor" and apparently wanting large money for it.. just don't know.....

I sent the guy an e-mail and asked him if he had some flexibility in his price and he replied that he does - make an offer. I like the rarity of this car, the color combo and the fact that it is a two owner car if, in-fact, it really is an the original owner lives down the street. If that is the case there should be tons of documentation to back up all the claims. Might be talking with him about it. I have his phone number and will probably give him a call just to talk. I am not an expert on F-Body cars but would like to add one to my garage - either something like this or a nice Lucy Blue 71 TA, HO 4-spd car. (with AC)...(deluxe Blue guts)...what was the difference between the standard and deluxe interior anyway?

It would be nice to see some pics of the underside.
Hopefully it's NOT a rusty mess under there.
If you get serious about it,make SURE you double check all the block & head #s,date codes,etc. I still think something looks fishy about the vinstamp (s) picture.

I think I have a 72 Norwood vin stamped block handy here somewhere.
I'll see if I can dig it out.

71 & 72 standard trim seats & door panels did NOT have Comfortweave inserts in them .

Seats were horizontally pleated & looked kinda like an baseball umpires chest protector.

They are actually pretty cool looking,but you tend to slide around in them when you are cornering hard as there is NO Comfortweave to hold your BUTT in one place.

As brewster previously pointed out,standard trim had NO "chicken bar" on the dash & NO door handle pull straps.

Check the detail photos in the auction closely. Pealing paint on the rear window intermediate panel and the trunk weatherstripping area looks like a mess -the weatherstrip is painted the same green as the car. Also, the blue door confirmation sticker is mostly painted over as well. The seller indicated in his response to me that the radiator support was replaced years ago from a "minor fender bender." Can't be very minor if you have to replace a rad support. It looks like a really neat car but make sure you inspect this one from top to bottom before laying down some serious cash.

It is too bad that the core support was damaged. What are all of the wires running along the top of the drivers side inner fender? The window sticker shows wheel opening moldings but those appear to be lost from the repaint.

Overall, those items are minor if everything else checks out. This Formula was driven 70,859 miles so I am surprised at how many original items are remaining. It is a very nice Formula. I love the green!

I'd guess that those are/were for "owner added" 70's accessories,possibly fog lights?

Note the extra unprotected wires running down the drives side inner fender.(also the 2 wirenut connectors between front bumper & rad support) It was fairly common in the day to install Fog/Driving lights behind the grills in these cars)

There are several other signs of 70's era accessories,toggle switch beside rear defogger switch & something (not sure what) below parking brake release.

It's possible that the seller has removed the items,but switches?lights in dash leave holes,so they remain.

There's also good chance that it also had air shocks & Cragars OR slot mags on it at one time.

Aren't we fortunate that it DIDN'T get a rear spoiler,as well?

Actually, I think they look much better WITH the rear spoiler - it gives the rear end more definition and shape, kind of sassy and sexy. Nobody likes a plain, drooping rear end that just drops off to nothing....a nice upward curve always makes a rear end look better.

oh this seller. He's local to me. This is the 3rd "big $$$" car he's listed on ebay in the last 4 months or so. I went to his house and looked at a 71 442 convert that he listed as a W-30 but didn't have the original motor. A guy in South Carolina wanted me and another guy to look at it for him. He also listed a 70 442 W-30 4sp hardtop as "unrestored survivor" or something close to that. It was far from it based on the pictures included in the auction. The guy in SC was very much interested in the 70, but the seller as the time said his dad isn't selling the 70 anytime soon unless it's very big $$$. 2 months later said 70 was on ebay. anyone is welcome to PM me if they more details.

Is the claim of 7 AC cars in 71 true? If so how many HO's were built with AC in 72? Its a nice car, but I am inherently suspicious of people who cant use English very well. j/k.

I like them better with the spoiler as well, mine didnt originally have the spoiler but it found one and brought it home before I got it. Not sure if it will stay or go when I get to the rebuild. I figure someone else can spring for the correct carb and wheels, any Qjet is fine with me.

Marc, I'm farily certain that I've seen double-stamped VIN on another Pontiac block, though I can't recall what block it was, and whether it was one of mine or one I saw here on PY.

I think the one of 7 a/c cars is a carry over from another mis-stated auction on eBay about a year ago. There was an original Sundance Orange (now metallic burnt orange) '72 455HO with a/c that the seller listed as a 1 of 7 a/c equipped 455HO Formula's. I have never seen anything that did more than break out the production numbers of a/c equipped Firebirds as a whole, but that percentage was closer to 50% in '72 if I remember correctly, so to say that only 7 of the 276 455HO Formulas built that year were equipped with a/c is way off to me.

Kinda what I was thinking. I have seen more than 6 of them in magazines and the guys on here who have AC. Rick is yours AC too?

My only claim to fame in the HO world is no paint code.. well and a weird option sheet including of all things a trailer hitch, but I dont think its factory, more like dealer.. would be funny if it was factory though.

So how do these rumors about this or that get stopped? The internet makes them spread faster, and most times if you correct the person you end up looking like a hard nosed jerk.
