Ditto Kenth. Not sure what you are reading as D 8. Likely the D < N (Day Night Shift Pointer with an arrow between pointing to whether the block was cast by the foundry on the Day or Night shift).

Little factoid, at some point during the '67 Model Year, the foundry moved the p/n of the Block, 9786133, from the pad by the Distributor hole to a ledge at the rear of the block behind the #8 cyl (where it remained until the end of traditional Pontiac V8 Block production in late 1977).

It is uncertain why the location changed, but perhaps because a hole on the Distributor pad obliterated the "97" portion of the p/n so that it reads 86133 such as on this one.

The 9786133 block was only used during the '67 Model Year and was used for the assembly of all 400 engines except for a handful of late '67 Ram Air engines that received a newly issued 4 bolt main block (an apparent harbinger of the '68 Ram Air engine). A couple of these blocks recently turned up but are extremely rare.

I've estimated the foundry cast around 500,000 p/n 9786133 blocks for MY '67. Where'd they all go??!!

BTW, if you are seeking a factory correct block for a '68 GTO with a regular 400, you are looking for a block with p/n 9790071 on the ledge. They cast those for MY '68 & '69 (new 400 block casting introduced around June '69). These will have the partial VIN stamped on them, which can be used to distinguish whether they were originally part of a true '68 or true '69 engine assembly in cases where the cast date code is hard to read, if date code correct is important to you.
