Default '81 Innerfender removal, easy?!?

Hi,

I want to take the inner fenders out of my '81 Trans Am to have them powdercoated black.

Are they easy to take out from underneath the fenderwell?

Just take the wheel off and unbolt the inner fender it and take it out.........or is that too good to be true?!?

That's pretty much the way it works, but you will probably need to pry them (lightly) over the fender lip.

Make sure you unbolt all of your accessories on the engine side.

Count on cutting 2 or 3 bolts off as the clips rust & break.

Save some hassel and pull the hood & fenders, I just removed
an inner fender to swap a blower motor, and I had to drag it over
& scratch up the upper control arms, getting back it in was no fun either.
It might take more work but it will be less trouble to have the whole fender off.

The reason I want to take them out from the inside is because my car has it's original factory paint on it.
I don't want to risk it while taking the fenders off and especially while putting them back on......the risk of paint damages isn't worth that to me

Which ever way you decide to pull the inner fenders,
I would cover the edges of the paint with some low tack
masking tape or "transfer tape" from a sign shop, the transfer
tape comes in wide rolls, that way you can protect the paint
while working on the car.

I understand about not pulling off more than you have to,
I had to take out the bottom fender bolts and really "pry"
the inner wheel house out between the frame, control arms
and fender, my paint is bad so it was not a big issue, but I cant
imagine trying to get it back in with out scratching something.

Maybee some one who has done it succesfully can give some tips,
I'd like to know how to do it also.

You also can check http://www.transamcountry.com/community/ they have a
pretty good auto body section on there and seem to specialize in
77-81 T/As.

Good Luck and take your time & be carefull
