I have a 65 Tempest 4dr with a 326 and 4brl carb. I got the car at a lot that just wanted rid of it so no owner history at all.
Heres my question, I have a Carter carburetor and an original looking fuel pump. The fuel pump works great now that I've sealed up the pick up lines, the problem is it seems to be overpressurizing the line to the carb and I am concerned that the float seat will be forced open and overfill the floats. Now it appears that there is a return line (1/4") next to the feed line, but the carb does not have a provision for the return. Am I missing something or does this carb not work on my setup?

I have an idea to just install a T fitting with a small orifice to connect to the return so that the carb receives most of the fuel, but anything extra is returned to the tank.

why do you think so? is the carb flooding or not?

I found my 4dr HT 63 Cat on a car lot like you did, it was a real find, I was going to pull the motor to put in my Bonneville but the Cat was so much fun I left it alone and drove it for 4 years. The car lot guy really wanted to get off it so I was able to score it for 750 down from 2000. I love that car.

I'll have to get a picture later as its dark out and flash pics suck. I can describe the line location, it's right next to the fuel line as it approaches the fuel pump. The previous owner/s capped it off so who knows where it went to after that.

The reason I think its overpressurizing is that the inline fuel filter that they had installed (Now removed) was spraying fuel everywhere after starting and running for a few seconds.

A mechanical fuel pump is unlikely to be producing too much pressure. Their are only a few aftermarket pumps that run higher than stock pressures for Pontiacs. The return lines goes to the pump not the line that goes to the carburetor. The fuel pump should have a threaded connection for the carb line and a push on outlet for the return line. Usually the return lines are connected to the pump with 5/16" rubber hose. Hope this helps.

are you saying that I should attach the return to the fuel pump? If so where? I'll look again tomorrow, but I don't see how right now.

Yes, there should be a fitting on the fuel pump for the return line.

Yes, you can Tee it to the line that goes to the carb. Or pick up a fuel filter for a AC car, it will have the return port...

So you're saying a fuel filter for a car equipped with AC (like mine) will have this "return port"? What year?

6 Grrrs That's what I need right there. Where can I find it? I know the sponsor has it, but could I find it locally?

Just get a filter for an A/C car. I would imagine if you aren't worried about having an AC brand filter, you could just get a filter at an auto parts store.
