I misspoke on my last post. Starlight Black was available on B and G bodies but not on the A body line. The special paint option was available on the all Firebirds except the Trans Am. The three '72 Trans Ams that Lloyd has noted above were some very special exceptions as was Larry Liest's '73 Super Duty Trans Am. Those cars are for real, but someone had to pull some strings to get those cars delivered in their special colors.

Yes, it should have been built with a wood grain dash. Although since the T/A bezel on it appears to be correct for the model year, the original buyer probably had the dealer install it. The buyer obviously wanted a few things that weren't ordinarily available (ref the paint).

Starlight Black was actually offered as a regular production option on Firebirds (other than Trans Ams) in 1971. A while back, I did see a black '71 Formula here in Omaha. Although I thought it looked pretty nice, I also believe that the brighter metallic colors better accentuate the lines of the early second generation Firebirds.

There is a '71 Black/Black Formula 455HO listed in John Wallace's registry, pretty heavily optioned car too

If that car had a red or white interior it would pull it off as a unique eye catcher. With a black interior as is, it is well, a very black car...... If it had a black vinyl top it would get whazzo uinique points also. It just looks kinda plain as it is..... having said that, I would kill for a plain car like that.....

back in the late 70's i had a black/black vinyl top/black deluxe interior 400/turbo400formula.it had a ton of options but the 400 engine was weak, finally seizing up when my dad revved it up.gave it to a friend to fix for his son who drove it for several years before selling it.next owner drove it into the ground and junked it in a very short time.sad end to a very nice car.

I know of one. I had a wanted add in Hemmings 20 years ago for one, some guy called but I never got pictures of it. I think he still has it, but if I remember correctly, it's got a "Black Widow" kind of story to it.

Please forgive me guys for interrupting this thread on the Black TA. I ordered a new pump to carb fuel line for my car. I got it and it isn't like my old one (except minus the kink in mine) . Which fuel pump is correct for my car, the side discharge, or the bottom discharge. I cant seem to come up with any pictures showing the difference between the standard performance, the Ram Air IV or the 455HO fuel lines from the pump to the carb. Again I apologize for the interruption, but I know you guys are more knowledgeable than I am. Any help is greatly appreciated. Thanks Eddie.

The "correct" pump # for ALL 1970 & 1971 Trans ams & 4bbl Formula's is a Delco 40838. That # was superceeded by 40959. Original (NOS) ones are difficult to find & 40838's command some serious $$$. MOST fuel pump mfgrs. use those #s or can cross reference them to their #'s. As previously discussed, this pump is capable of taking your HO into the LOW 12's. If you ordered a pump/carb line for a 71 Trans am you SHOULD have the right one. |

Thanks a million 2 many TA's. That's the pump I have and the fuel line fits. I couldn't be sure if what I had was correct or not until I saw your pictures. '70 & '71 being the same means they sent me the wrong line? Your pictures solved everything. They've sent me the wrong line. Thanks again, Eddie

Hey Jody,
How about that 71 GTO HO in the latest HPP. Has to be the fastest 71 GTO? Best pass was a 12.42? Not bad for a 71 YE code A body PS car! Did you attend?

Yes, saw it run in person. Very fast! My buddy has a similar car with Judge stripes, same color and 455 HO that will debut next Spring.

I have been gone for a while, work, traveling for work, moving into a new house, VMP, Stanton-rain and more rain etc.
Finally catching up on a few things. Glad to see Jody updated everyone on Paul's car. I was fussing over it last weekend before putting it away for the season. There is more in the car than has been seen in the few passes Paul has gotten. Rained at Stanton and lost a day at VMP to rain. Even so the setup is getting closer. He was putting down 1.82 short times on the before mentioned 12.52 @ 107.32 pass. The car and driver were 3950 lbs. We had a few items on the list and now he should be ready for Martin next year. The car at that weight running mid 12's is amazing. And it was not just a one time deal he had several 12.50's. Boy that thing launches two tons well. The RA IV Bruno and I took down really needed the two days. We did not have enough passes to sort it out. Doing the sorting in public is probably not the best way to do it but we ran out of time for anything else. We assembled the car in two weeks prior to the event. There is a long list of items that were left for the winter but we had modest success anyhow. I only had time to jet the car at the very end. The rest of the passes were focused on the chassis setup and launch ability. The car would stick and pull hard and then blow off the tires 40" out. We somewhat got the chassis going in a fair direction. We have several items to still address that we found at VMP on the chassis. But in the end we had 9 out of 15 passes that were from a 1.77 short time to 1.83. We need to knock another .1-.15 off those to run with the best. First time out with me driving a real auto for the first time ever I think we got lucky enough overall. The jetting was left alone and after the first few passes we switched to the carb that made substaintially more power on the dyno. That threw the entire chassis thing off again. I thought we were close until the carb change. The carb in the end was horribly lean due to the good air. After rounds Jay and I made a pass and I changed just the hanger and the car gained a full 1.1+ mph over the previous pass which only had enough time between the two runs to change the hanger. It was a full .9 mph over the best previous mph of the day. Mind you that was only a hanger change. That was the last pass allowed. We probably had a bunch more mph in her but ran out of time. What we accomplished in one day of tuning, qualifying and racing was solid. The car went a best of [email protected] on a 1.83 short time. Best short time was a 1.77, best ET was a pair of 11.59's and best mph was 118.34. We got a nice start. What happened to the HO Forum. We are falling behind those pesky but fast SD guys. Fast should be plural as now BOTH Chuck and Paul are well planted in the 12's. Post some more cool HO stuff guys. Anyone know of a nice number 2 quality '73 Formula? Motor does not matter but an auto without air is much preferred. Mark |

According to the sheet they will ALSO work in the "other" round port 455 (2nd fastest) as well as any other 71-76 455. As I understand it,a high compression round port 455 was planned as the ULTIMATE large displacement Pontiac motor for 1970 & I'm guessing GM comissioned TRW to design these pistons (perhaps as an OEM application),but with the premature DEATH of high compression engines for 71,there was NO OEM market for them. One of our contributers here (from the Great White North) has a set of these in a 72 HO with the domes cut down to reduce chamber volume. 10 years ago that car acheived almost "legendary status" at the dragstrips in the area. Totally STOCK looking, especially under the hood,it made Pontiac BELIEVERS out of countless Ford,Chev & Dodge guys with TONS of aftermarket speed parts on THEIR cars. This round port T/A was driven to track on street tires with the sticky tires in the back seat & once installed would run LOW 12 second ET's all day long. I've heard that engine is now in an OTG. (perhaps we will get an UPDATE?) |
