Default stock 10 bolt rear question

I currently have my rear axle out and on the bench for cleaning and painting. I am about to put the 10bolt cover and gasket on. Is there any reason I can't add the oil to the case before I close it up??? It would be easier than adding it through the small hole. The only thing is that I don't know how much to put in. Where would I find the capacity? It is a stock rear. 67 firebird. Thank you

My capacities chart says the rear holds 4.5 pints, or 2.25 quarts.

The way I would do is to put the rear up on two jack-stands with the yoke down and the axles inserted and the retainers bolted up. Add the required amount, put the cover and gasket on, tighten them down and then rotate it until you can support the case with the yoke at a slight downward angle. Next spin an axle a couple of times to distribute the oil, let it sit for a few minutes to level out, pull the plug and make sure the oil's at the bottom of the hole. If it's higher you can drain it until it's at the proper level.

Thanks guys.. I was trying to avoid taking the plug out and dribbling on my new paint job.
