The GM 8.5, 10 bolt (corporate) rearend can be built plenty strong and relatively cheap. I think that there are probably some units out of cars from the 70's that would bolt right in. I am not sure about the interchange for coil spring cars but others on here will probably weigh in. We have been running one of these rearends in the Bird for over 8 years with no issues.

SO WHAT GEARING DO YOU THINK IS THE BEST GEARS FOR 1/4 MILE FOR MY APPLICATION? IT SEEMS EVERYBODY IS USING SOMETHING DIFF? IT LOOKS LIKE YOU LIKE THE 373'S SO IF I TAKE MY REAR END TO A SPECIALIST WHAT DO I NEED TO TELL THEM EVERYTHING I NEED TO JUST BOLT THIS THING BACK IN AND HAVE IT READY? IS THERE SOMETHING I NEED TO DO WITH THE AXLES? WILL I NEED LADDER BARS OR SOMETHING CLOSE TO THAT? I AM THINKING I SHOULD DO A MINI TUB WHAT U THINK?

Jeff, do you currently have a rear end in the car or are you starting from scratch? If you have a 10 bolt, 8.2" which is what would have come in the Tempest originally, then I would upgrade to the 8.5. Gearing will depend on what your primary use will be for the car. If mostly for the track, with some street use, I would still stay in the 3.42, 3.73, 3.90 range. If more street driving then 3.08, 3.23, or 3.42. There are so many variables in each combo that you need to make sure it all works together. Again, since you are running a coil spring setup I can't speak to that as well as others might: all my experience is with leaf spring f-bodies. If you can get 'enough' tire inside your wheel wells I don't think mini tubs are necessary. We are running 275-60X15 d.o.t. drag tires on the Bird and they fit no problem.
