Default NAPA Power steering gear box

I currently have one of those POS Cardone quick ratio gear boxes in my 67 GTO and the turning radius really sucks because of the incorrect internal stops.

Has anyone tried the NAPA NSP88277060 BOX or the one sold by PY GMU-50. I want to change the box out to another quick ratio and regain the original turning radius.
I'm tired of 4 point parking and 3 point "U" turns. Any advise? Does the NAPA box or PY box have the correct stops?

FWIW,I was at my local NAPA store a few days ago, asked them about the steering radius on their box for a 69,they couldn't answer except to say that they have the same box listed for A and F bodies(different radius)so the counter guy called the supplier and let me talk to him,and he couldn't answer either!Since then someone has told me(don't know if this is true for 68-72,true for all A-bodies,or not true at all)that the stops are in the top cover,so if you buy the box and the radius is wrong, all you have to do is change the cover.Hopefully someone else will chime in with more complete information.Anybody?

I have a NAPA quick ratio box in my 65 and it works great. I think the part number is 27-6509.

Default don't do it

Don't buy the napa box if they list both firebird and GTO with the same part #... It will be hit or miss as to whether you get the right box.

This place can rebuild your stock box and put in a quick ratio conversion, but it does cost about $400.

Also, do a search, this has been discussed many times before and there's lots of good info already there.

I've heard many good things about the NAPA box here so I bought one for my 67 Firebird. The engine is almost done and I'll be putting her back together soon; I'll let you know then. The turning radius is 2 1/4, just like the one I took out.

There's also Lee Manufacturing in Southern California, everybody here rants and raves about them but they were a little too rich for my blood...$400...

Good luck!

I dont know anyone who has either box. When mine was due for a rebuild, the guys around here with 66 & 67 A bodies recommended a rebuild or an F body box. I liked it the "old" way so I just had it rebuilt to factory specs.

Is the A-body box and the F-body box interchangeable?
What's the difference?
My stock A-body box was rebuilt by some jokers in LA, they changed it over to a quick ratio but I'm not too happy with it...stupid thing is leaking already...they were cheap and I got what I paid for!

I got mine for my 67 from NAPA. I ordered the 1st gen z-28 box for mine. Bolted up fine.

Are you talking about NAPA Part# 88-277060? That's what I've got in my 'bird...that'll bolt right up?

I can't remember the number off the top of my head. I looked it up for a z-28 then cross referenced it for a quick ratio box for the 67 firebird and they were the same numbers so I thought it would work, and it did.

GM boxes from those years bolt right up. Rag joints and internal differences in the boxes are about the only changes. I have a 78 WS Firebird box on my GTO. I haven't had an issue with the slight difference in turning radius.

I put a NAPA box in my GTO.
They asked how many turns lock to lock and offered either 2.5 or 3.5.
I chose the 2.5 and it sucks.
I think all they did was change the stops,it is not a quick ratio and the turning radius is awful.

It should and what David said. Most GM boxes should interchange.

Are you sure its the box thats leaking or the one of the two hoses??

It's leaking where the fitting screws into the box, I doubt the fitting is leaking...

my understanding is that a-body and f-body boxes will interchange as far as bolting in,but the turning radius is less on an f-body box,so if you put one in an a-body,you'll have less turning radius, even tho it'll bolt in.Since Napa can't tell me what the radius is,I'm going to have mine rebuilt, unless there is an easy way to change the radius stops.I have heard that the stops are in the cover, and if you switch covers, your radius is restored.Does anybody know if this is true?if it is,one could buy the NAPA box, switch covers, and have a new, quick ratio box for $159 with a warranty. Not bad.

When I replaced mine I called NAPA and asked if they carried a "quick ratio" box for a 65 GTO. The salesman looked and said "yes, we offer a quick ratio and a standard factory ratio. They are rebuilt boxes with quick ratio internals". After checking his stock to see if he had it I went and picked it up and installed it. The quick ratio box that I got has the same turning radius as the old factory box that I took off and it works great. For the price you can't beat it. That's my story and I'm sticking to it. Lol.

$83.33 core charge (which was then taken off because I had my core with me)

Hope this helps!

Default napa on-line

I just checked the napa on-line shopping for a 65 GTO , they have the p/s gear box quick ratio listed as NSP88277060 same as my original post. I guess I could go to the store and talk to them. I did search by part number also 27-6509, no part listed??

I've read about all the boxes that you can get out of the bone yard and change to style fittings and new pump discharge fitting/flow control valve. I think the turning radius for the correct box is 43 degrees or so each direction. I could get mine rebuilt (stops removed) but I'm looking for the easy and fastest way out.
