Default Earliest '65 with Rally Cluster/Tach?

I'm trying to determine if the Rally Cluster & Tach option was not available at the beginning of the '65 model year.

Please post the build week of your car if it was built with the Rally Cluster & Tach.

Thanks in advance -

K

Keith, I don't have a date for you but I can tell you this. I bought this car from the original owner in 1980. He went to the dealer and wanted to buy a 64 GTO but it was to late to order one like he wanted so he ordered this car. He CLAIMED it was the first GTO that dealer got in 65. It had the Ralley Guages, TI ignition, AND it came through with a 64 style wood wheel. It also had a separate wiring harness for the ralley gauges that was not incorporated into the regular harness like the later build cars. I sold this car in 1982.

Thanks to everyone that has PM'd. Right now the earliest response is mid-November. I have to believe there were some September or October cars out there. Please let me know if you have one.

Jerry - I am very interested in your car. Is there any way to figure out a build timeframe (do you have any old paperwork on the car)?

Thanks,

K

Keith,

I'll look in one place tomorrow, I MAY have a copy of a bill of sale where I sold the car with the vin on it. Other than that, I'm sure I have nothing left. I'm lucky to have that one picture left.

Default '65 GTO Rally gauges

According to PHS documentation, our '65 GTO convertible came with Rally Gauges and tach. It was built at the Pontiac plant during the first week of September, 1964. I hope this helps. Happy Wide Tracking! Jim

Wow, Jim. That pretty much nails it! (That's about as early as it gets).

I'm going to send a PM about your car.

Thanks for the reply.

Brent - I don't think I'm familiar with that one.

I have been carrying these around in my head for the last year; It's probably time to write them down.

For "X" cars, I have:

Zbuickman................08A X.................Body number 140
Goatboyjohnny..........08A X.................Body number 340
Mine........................09A X.................Body number 1563
MH 1964 (Ohio).........09A X.................Body number 1588
Jim W (Dryden MI).....09A X.................Body number 2469 (VIN did not match cowl tag)
Blu65GTO.................19A X.................Built November 1964

These were all built in Pontiac, Michigan.

Thank you.

It would be interesting to know if Fremont put an "X" on such an early car.

Keith, don't know if the Body Nos. will prove significant to the "X" code, but since the Body Nos. are dependent upon the Body Style within the Lemans Model Series, please add the Body Style of each car to the list of data you've collected.

I'd also suggest that you expand the search. See if you can find the "X" code on any non-GTO A bodies and I'd also suggest a post in the big car Forum to see if any guys have found an "X" code on their Pontiac Plant Data Plates for '65.

I have all kinds of ideas for what it might indicate, but most of them would not be specific to the GTO, so I would expect to find the "X" code on other cars too.

If enough data can be collected, you'll have a better chance of deciphering the meaning.
