I went to Performance Years today at Charlotte NC and they referred me here. I have a 68 firebird OHC. They show 2 different listings for 68. One is for the OHC, and one is for the 400 or other 68. My questions is can I use the basic Tach for 68 & will it work, or do I need to get the OHC tach. I'm hoping to get back over there tomorrow, to buy the right one. My husband says that he didn't think that the reg tach would work correctly. That it has a resister or something to change from 6 to 8 cyl.
Oh and would the harness be the same for both. Thanks for the Help! Tammy [email protected] |

They should be able to answer the question on the harness.
Buy the one for the 6cyl, They read the ign pulse at a different rate than the 8 cyl units do. Mike

Thanks for the quick answer. I will buy the 6 cyl. Sad thing is I already bought the other one.... So will just try and get rid of that one, and get the 6 cyl one. When I bought the one, they didn't think it would make any difference. I thought that the rpm was different (5100 versus 5500). Anyway, thanks again

If you bought if off of P/Y ask if they'll trade it in if you bought it recently.

The tachs need to be calibrated for either the 6 or the 8 cyl.
Internally there is a capacitor that changes value depending on the # of cylinders. It's an easy change for someone who knows some electronics and can solder. George
