Hello, still trying to sort out the wiring issues in the engine compartment of the 65 GTO. Does anyone have any original pictures of their engine compartment that they could post? I especially need some of the wires as they connect to the coil. Also, it would be helpful to have a shot of the fuse block, and the bundle of wires that goes into a grommet just to the right of the fuse block. I am guessing that this might be the rally gauge adapter harness that comes out of that hole. Thanks a bunch.

I can take some pictures tonight.
Did your car come originally with the rally cluster? Can you tell me when it was built (ie, date code off the cowl tag is fine). Thanks, K

Yes, it is an original rally gauge car. I have not looked at the firewall tag in a while, but I seem to recall it being built in March or April of 1965. The wires that go to the coil now are bundled up and go through a hole/grommet just to the right of the fuse block under the hood. It all looks original (the grommet looks factory and is old and faded). I am thinking that this might be the rally gauge adapter harness that the restoration catalogs have for sale. I guess it goes under the dash and plugs into the main dash harness somewhere. I'll have to climb under there and see where it goes this weekend. Thanks for the help!

Here's a few (...they are kind of hard to take even though it's easy to see in real life!).
Forgive the Accel coil; that's been on there a long time but I think the wiring is accurate. I should mention my car did not come with the rally cluster (it was ordered but not built that way). K ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]()

Keith, thanks a bunch for the pictures. The wires I am interested in are the three wires that look like they feed through the firewall, just to the lower right of the back of the fuse block. It looks like yours also has the black rubber grommet like mine. Mine has the same feed through the grommet, but the wires are wrapped up with the black factory tape. Do you know what the three wires on yours go to? Does one go over to the coil? My car was a rally gauge car from the factory, so it could be different. Once it goes through the firewall, my wires are still bundled up, but there is a brown wire that has a fuse link that attaches to the fuse block. I am still thinking that this harness might be the rally gauge adapter harness that I have seen in the restoration catalogs. I really appreciate you taking the time to take the pictures. I may take some of mine and post it, so you can see it for yourself.

My bad; when you said "...to the right of the fuse block..." you meant facing the front of dash while standing in the engine compartment (farther towards the driver's side of the firewall, not the passenger side).
I was looking the on the wrong side. I can take another look when I get home tonight. K

Eric - a) In the picture on the right there is a small (oval) paint stamp. Can you tell me what it says? Should be something like "Line Test OK", then the date and maybe "1st Shift" or "2nd Shift". b) Also - can you tell me the build plant and build date of your car? Did it come originally with the rally cluster? Thanks, K

Eric, thanks for the pictures. It really helps. Keith, thanks again, yes, the grommet that I am talking about is just to the lower right side of the back of the fuse block, if you are standing outside of the car with the hood open, and facing the engine. By the way, mine also has some sort of stamp over under the fender. I don't have the fender off so I cannot read all of it, but I can see part of it by using a flashlight and looking over under the fender.

Kieth
that stamp is pretty illegible .. The car was bad dirty and when I cleaned it it must have rubbed off some ... My 2nd shift pix is in a different place and enclosed some pix of it this car is a Nitewatch Blue Parchement Parchment car. 4bbl auto Power steering power front seat power antenna and maybe a couple of other minor options. No Rally Gauges pack ![]() It is on back burner and the firewall was blasted so stamp are gone Xept for pix Marty I will take a pix or 2 tonight if I remember as I got to coach a bball game but is my current resto project My current I added ralley gauges and the harness I ran thru that grommet after a good cleaning. Thanks Eric

Eric, thanks again for all the help. Mine could be different because it came from the factory with the rally gauge package. Just not sure. I guess what I am trying to do is see if I need to buy an engine harness or the rally gauge adapter harness to get the wire that goes to the coil terminal. My guess is that it has to be on one of those harneses. The only wire that is brittle is the one going to the coil, so I hate to buy the whole harness when only one wire is bad. Of course, I could just splice in a new wire, but then that could cause issues later on down the road. Thanks guys for all of the help.

Thanks Eric. Looks like an April build. Just curious - what plant was the car built at?

![]() Marty I got some pix of restored firewall with my convert power wire coming out of grommet and the rally harness check them out hope you can make heads er tails out of them Notice my tabs broke off my firewall to fuse block panel ,, I gotta do something about this but dont know what at this time Looking at the resto books for one. But my harnesses arent holding very well ![]() Marty also there are a lot of post here about Rally gauges and how they came and I believe I've seen from Pete Serio that all cars had the same harness from the factory and when rally gauge packs were added they(GM) used the same harness and just installed it at the factory Look up this post or thread http://forums.maxperformanceinc.com/...t=rally+gauges

And you are correct, the bundle of wires coming out of the grommet are the wires for the Rally Gauges.

Thanks Jerry--There is a single male connector on it, as for transistor ignition never thought of it I'll have to check more. Sry couple more questions my car is a auto/tri power on one of the harness(PIC #2 for auto kickdown ,Black wire/blower motor-Pink strip to +coil ? ) there is a broken blue wire? On the alternator harness there is a broken green wire. Any hints anyone.
For Keith S. my car is a 11D 23727 KAN1022 217 W-W W 2WGPR 4F 5NW Last edited by Carl A; 04-23-2009 at 11:14 PM. |

Again, I don't think anything plugs into that connector. My car is an automatic tripower also. (I've changed out the tripower to a dual quad setup) IIRC the kickdown connector is a black wire with an orange stripe. It has 12V on it when the switch is on, so I used it for my electric choke. I'll check my alternator wires tomorrow to see if I can help you on that one.

Thanks everyone for the pictures. They really help. I unrolled the factory tape on mine last night, and there is a brown wire that went to the coil, a blue wire that I think goes to the oil pressure sending unit, a green wire that goes to the temp sending unit. Mine did not have the fuse on the wire going to the coil, but it looks like someone had already spliced in a different connector going to the coil, so I am guessing that they just did away with the fuse part, if that is how it came from the factory. I really appreciate all of the posts/pictures- it really was helpful.
