Default hood latch catch after popping open?

Greetings again,

My hood on my 68 GTO tribute will pop open with the front latch and then i can just lift it up without the second safety catch?? interfering.

When i first got the car i would have to pull the latch and hold it all the way out to get the hood up.

Not sure what the heck happened. I searched for this but had no luck.

1. How is the hood release/safety catch suppose to operate correctly?

2. How do i fix/adjust/replace to make it work.

My fear is that driving down the highway and if the release somehow fails/trips, that hood becomes the worlds heaviest drag car parachute.

Thanks

After the hood pops up, push back down but do not let it latch. Pull out the release lever again then pull up on the hood and it will open.

There is no adjustment, Make sure that the spring that pushes the saftey latch is not broken. Also make sure that all the moving parts move freely and are not stuck. The latch is intended to use 2 pulls to totaly release the hood. the first releases the main latch and then the second releases the saftey.

You're pop up spring may just be over-aggressive. Mine will do that if I pull the release lever and hold it, the force of the spring pushes it up past the safety. If I just do a quick pull and release, the safety catches the hood. It's just a matter of if you pull the lever and hold it out long enough for the spring to push past the stop (at least with mine)

Well I just had the same problem but my secondary latch would NOT release.
Sounds like your spring is gone or broke... or it could have slipped off the
secondary lever. The secondary lever is suppose to move from drivers side
to pass side to release.

Remove the latch and clean it up real good and re-lube it.

I marked up the pict so you can learn what part does what. That secondary lever hooks
onto the lip on the hood. In the picture the latch is in the "safety" position. The main
latch is released but the secondary is still latched. It is spring loaded so you should be
able to move it back and forth with your hand. If not something is wrong..
Either the spring or its binding on something...

Norwood that is one nice latch! Is that restored or repop?

I ended up having to cut my latch with a torch to open the hood.

I had this problem twice, once when I replaced my hood and once after that. Royal pain in the you know what. The second time i had to lower the front bumpr, loosen the latch bolts, remove the valance and get at it from underneith. If everything is lined up pretty well it may be that from repeated opening the lip in the square hole in the underside of the hood gets slightly bent out toward the latch and it gets a sharp edge that catches the safety latch. I used a dremmel type tool and a grinder bit and slightly "polished" the lip and the safety lach "ear" to remove the sharp edges. I also lubed my hinges, latch, and put some lube on the under side of the hood where the hood lift spring on the front contacts the hood. My hood pops clear of the latch completely with one pull now.

Thanks, that is a restored latch, and I thought that I was the only one who is anal enough to really know how these things work......The Repops are not very nice , they are plated compleatly WRONG..
