Default Power steering bracket spacers ?????

68 Experts,

Please take a look at the spacers on this page from the 68 service manual. I've taken apart a few 68's that "appeared to be" original, and these spacers were NOT present. What is your experience? Would someone look at an unmolested 68 to see if the spacers are there.

I just had mine apart a few months ago and it had the spacers. I can't swear for sure that the pump is original although I believe it is.

The spacers level out the pump face so the bracket can mount flush. One bolt face sits on a raised shoulder, the spacers bring the other two bolts up to the same plane so the bracket sit's flat.

Wink Check with...

Ron Johnson @ Potomac Pontiac. He sells the correct spacers as a set and they are spot on correct. Trust me. Ron

Thanks Guys.....OK.....I had a little brain cramp....the spacers are there.

I really want to use the 68 pulley belt arrangement on this engine.

So here's what I have:

74' 400 with the original balancer, timing chain cover, and water pump.

68' Crank pulley, fan pulley, and PS pump/pulley.

1- Can I order the "short" 11 bolt water pump and have the belts line up?

2 - I think I need the 69 style front alternator bracket (the strap)?

Is this all going to work?

no it won't unless you change the WP pulley with it. The short pump needs it's own special pulley 9796060 to line up with the 67-70 crank pulley heights. Stay with your standard 11 bolt late 69 and up WP and find a late 69/70 WP pulley. That plus your 68 crank and 68 PS pump will line up. You can use WP pulley 9799127 or 9799130 The 69 alt brackets will line up correctly with the 11 bolt cover and make it look like the 68. If you feel like fabricating, you can take your 68 front alt bracket, cut a half inch off it (just past the bolt hole) redrill a new hole and heat it with a torch to bend a tighter arc into it and it becomes a 69 bracket. The rear brackets are the same 67-69
