On my 66 GTO the power steering still squeals when you turn the wheel and you get close to lock. I have tried all sizes of belts and still the same results. I am beginning to think it is either the pump, pulley or the wrong brackets. When I restored the car 4 years ago it was piecing the whole power steering addition together and I wonder if I have the correct brackets. Attached are two pictures that are the best I could take on the car- note the adjustment bolt is as far as it will go. Any ideas here, I am tired of the embarrassing squeal from the power steering and could use some help.

It looks like you have the wrong belt. It appears to be too wide. I think it should fit a little lower in the pulley.

I second the wrong belt. The one on my car fits lower in the pulley. I'm sure you've check out the other major cause, low fluid.

Thats what I thought to begin with, I had a set of belts from our host and had the same problem, so I got a belt from the local auto supply- same result. I will try a new belt from either our host or another supplier (any suggestions??). Does anyone happen to have the correct belt number? Fluid is ok- that the first thing I check everytime I drive the car. Thanks for the help & I will try a different belt. Just a thought could it be a wrong pulley????

Maybe it's the wrong pulley?
In other words, maybe the right belt is wrong for the part you used since you were kind of piecing it together.

Larry, is the steering box a stock ratio box? And is the flow control valve in the pump the correct (low pressure) one for the box? I changed my 66 to a quick ratio box and with the required high pressure control valve in my pump I get a chirping squeal when the box hits the locks at full travel. I put the low pressure valve back in as a test just to see what would happen and could hold the wheel on the lock at full travel with no squeal. This is normal for the high pressure so I learned to live with the noise on those occasions where I need to make tight turns.

Todd- it is a stock ratio box and I would presume the flow control valve in the pump is correct (I had my local parts store send it to be rebuilt/relative sure is came from a car with stock ratio). When I get a good belt number going to try that first, then on to the pump if necessary.

Take the paint off the pulley inner grooves on the power steering and water pump pulley, scuffing both with coarse sand paper for more grip. Also try a narrower and shorter belt so you can get more adjustment out of the pump, no more then 1" deflection in the belt I believe is the spec...

I don't know if this will help since I have a 67 with A/C but, my power steering belt # is337 D:3. It is made by Dayco. There are more numbers on it as follows: 15505 11A1285. It is about 3/8" wide.

Try a Dayco #15515 w o A/C or 15530 w A/C. I got mine at Advance Auto but you can cross reference that number and brand at any parts store you choose. If you can, take your old belt with you and check it against the new one to make sure it is narrower and shorter.

Thanks- I will remove any paint in the pulley and try those belt numbers. Hopefully that will fix the problem.

How does the belt fit in the water pump pulley? If it fits like the power steering pulley I would say it is the belt for sure.

fyrffytr1- I will check that out as well when I change belts. I am going to try the Dayco 15515 belt.

That's the PS belt I,m using with no issues, I also have a later model PS pump. There plenty of room for additional belt adjustment as well.

If you are looking for the "correct" belt try these folks. They have the original style with part number and date code on them. When I hit the lottery I am going to buy all three belts that I need from them.

I just ordered 2 new belts from Quanta Products, for $ 70.00 hope that fixes the problem. Thanks you'll for all the help, will keep you posted.
