Advice on 95 Jeep trans leak
A very good friend of mine has a 95 Grand Cherokee with the 5.2 V-8 (318) and OD auto trans. It is the AWD model. The trans has been leaking pretty bad from the front. Unfortunately, he is one of the unlucky fellows who lost their job and is barely holding onto his house.
I am trying to help him out with a few things and would like to see if I can get this leak fixed for him as this is his only vehicle. I thought about pulling the trans/transfer case to change the front seal but I remembered alot of these modern transmissions can be screwy (like the Ford A4LD for example) and don't want to open a Pandora's box with this unfamiliar (to me) trans. What typically would be the cause of such a leak (front seal, pump seal(s) etc.) on these transmissions and if I took it to a shop, what would be a reasonable charge for the job? I realize the majority of the cost would be the R&R of the unit. BTW, the trans works flawlessly and has no other issues.

That's just a 500/518. The pump is the same as a 904/727. The problem is most likely the o-ring around the pump.
Get a pump gasket, o-ring, bushing and seal, check the converter hub. Those trans also puke in the front when they are overfilled.

Hi milage? wear in frt pump hub bushing could be causing leak out hub seal.

Yes, actually 150k. But friend says it was replaced under warranty at 75k so I'm thinking that 150k number is cut in half. That is, unless the dealer did a halfass job and only fixed the specific problem(s) at the time.
