Interesting and logical. It does look like Don Gays car that Jay Howell built except for the extended front end. That must have been added by this team as I never saw Gays car with the longer wheelbase like shown in pic.

Steve, this 66 GTO was advertised For sale in, I think National Dragster or Hot Rod, back in the late sixtes/ early 70's by Dick Stokes, in the ad, he claims the car is the former Don Gay Funny, i'm sure the extended front end was added after Don Sold the car. a friend of mine was trying to find the Don Gay Car a few years back, this piece of info turned up during research. trail went cold after Dick Stokes owned it, when Mike found the 66 Grey Ghost Funny car that was at Norwalk this year, he thought at first glance that it might be the Gay car, being located in Illinois,(Gay Cars last known state of residense) but upon seeing it was all fiberglass he knew it wasn't the case.

Does anyone remember the '63 Swiss-Cheese car for sale in the Hot Rod classifieds in about '78? If I remember correctly, the asking price was $2200.

Better yet, does anyone have one of the issues it was in? I know it was in at least 2.

Thanks, unbelievable, isn't it? What issue was that one in? The one I'm talking about, if I remember correctly, was a dark color-probably red. It was also, again if I remember correctly, on a trailer and priced at $2200.

I think it is very believeable as that was what they were worth in the late 70's.

I just had that 1962 Catalina ad marked as "late 70's Hot Rod Magazine", so I don't have the exact issue. I do recall a Mickey Thompson car popped up in Hemmings back in the late 70's for around the same price, aluminum nose, very low miles (around 2000 I believe), but I can't recall if it was a swiss cheese car or not. May have been PJ Heck owned at the time. I'd have to look for that ad, unless someone already posted it?

Further pics have surfaced of the Stokes Firebird. Fender lettering says 'Firebird by Pontiac'. Car is 426 powered , not Pontiac powered, just for the record.
That explains why I had never heard of it.

In the background on the other side of the fence, you can see someone's yard and house. There used to be a treehouse in a big old tree in the yard too that I think dates back to the 70's. I remember it seeing races there 10-15 years ago. The treehouse is gone now, and I think the house too, having been torn down within the last few years.
