Default Carb choice ????

I have an engine build that I have just completed, here are the specs on what I have, a 70 400 pontiac .30 over , balanced/line bored, Lunati Voodo cam .529 lift, 1.52 comp-cam roller rockers, mild port work on casting number 96 heads, milled .30, edelbrock intake RPM II, 1" carb spacer, hooker 1 3/4" headers, this is going into a 64 Lemans post car, the trans is a Turbo 400, shift kit, 3300 stall, 390 gear ratio in the rear... I have two carbs of choice, first is a Barry Grant 850 cfm, and the second is a Quadrajet 600 CFM , would like to know which carb would be better choice, for this build, this is not going to be a daily driver, but a weekend cruiser/strip car.....

I think the 850 may be a bit much for your combo & cubes even though you did not post your full cam specs or your CR?

With a .030" over 400 and #96 heads milled .030" which will remove generally about 1cc per every .005" that put your chambers about 90cc's so your about 8.75 to 9:1.

The Qjet size starts at 750 and a modified one set up to your new combo may be a better choice....get Cliff R's book.

A better Holley / Demon size would be a 750 or Mighty 825

I'll say either a 700-750 DP carb. If you had a little more compression I might try an 800 DP but only maybe. The issue with going too big on the carb is losing the throttle response and low speed power numbers. Too much carb will really hurt the take off and 60' times. Good Luck! JD

Good luck to the new owner of the Ventura II! Sold the car after 13+ years. Look for it on the Hot Rod Power Tour in the future as it's currently being re-configured as a Pro-Touring ride!

The 850 is going to be big on that application as we are typically looking for close to 500 cubic inches to support it. If it has down leg boosters it will flow close to 1000 cfm.
