Default Glowing headers - 455

Built my new motor and now have 500 miles on it. After I did my first oil change I was warming up the car holding the throttle at about 2000 rpm, I noticed on the drivers side the two center tubes started to glow red. Assume this has been happening while driving down the road. Anyhow, below are the specs of my motor and want to know if anyone has thoughts as to what's causing this and if I should be concerned (actually the first set of ceramic headers that I've ever owned).

455, punched .040
Crank 010/010 – internal balanced with damper and flex plate 0 balanced
Keith Black Forged Pistons .040
Pro-Warrior floating forged rods w/ARP bolts
Melling M-54D-S Oil pump
Rear Seal – 6382S GraphTite
7 quart Moroso oil pan

Kauffman 85CC D Port heads w/ 310CFM Port work
2.11 Intake and 1.66 Exhaust
ARP Head bolts
5000 series Ferrea valves
Steel retainers
10 degree locks
PC seals
Hyd cam springs for .600 lift
ARP rocker studs, spring seats
5 angle valve job
Comp Cams 1.5 roller rockers (Red ones)

Competition Cam Hydraulic Roller Custom Grind: (Cam has been installed at 108 ICL)
Intake Exhaust
DURATION @ .006 291 307
DURATION .050 236 245
LIFT LOBE .361 .361
GROSS VALVE LIFT .541 .541
LOBE SEPARATION 112.0

Valve Timing Open Close

Competition Cams High Energy Hydraulic Roller Lifters - #857-16
Rollmaster Roller Timing Chain – (9 keyway)
Edelbrock 1407 (750CFM) w/electric choke
Edelbrock Performer RPM intake – port matched to heads
Tin Indian Performance Intake gasket – TIP#120230
Plugs are NGK R5671A-8 and are gapped at .040
MSD Digital HEI module in a new distributor.

Talking Headers glowing red

I used to see this alot on our chassis dyno, it's running lean on those cylinders. I've seen a 350 Chevy turn the entire set of headers a pretty red. We fixed the "Organized Leak" (Holly) richened it up, HP picked up and the glowing subsided.

What is your ignition timing, initial and total. Might need to advance some.High temps , glowing exhaust are symptoms of retarded timing.

"Initial is 16 and total is 36."
Sounds good to me. Might want to look into that edel running lean like previous poster suggested. Good luck

I've seen this before. Kinda wild looking in the dark....

Ignition problem was what was wrong when I saw red headers.

I ruined the ceramic coating on my Hooker Competition headers from making them "Glow in the dark"! Mine was an issue with my HEI. I had locked the timing at 36 total all the time but something wasn't right!!! I'll bet there's something going on with the ignition system, provided your 100% sure your cam timing is correct. I've seen a severely retarded cam timing cause glowing headers too! Good Luck! JD

Carb is very lean, or leaking carb base gasket or leaking intake gasket. If the timing is what you say it is, something is making the system dead lean. This is very bad and will ruin the engine. Do not drive like this, except to troubleshoot. This will melt pistons, ruin headers, burn exhaust valves. Excessive EGT is indicated by glowing headers and usually is caused by retarded ignition timing or very lean fuel mixture.

A friend in HS had a '72 Mustang with a 289 and headers. Not tuned very well. One night we got out of the car, and it was like the car had a neon underglow kit. The headers were glowing that bad. The engine soon broke piston rings and started smoking.

Lose the edlebrock carb and I'll bet that will big a huge improvement right there.

Way,way wrong carb for that combo...

But agree that this should also be checked thoroughly for any possible vacuum leaks or such as well.

Also note that long duration/wide LSA cams tend to open the exhaust valve quite a bit earlier than many other cams do,so slightly higher EGT's are part of what comes with that choice.

Though the pipes still should'nt be getting quite that hot, just understand that this "glowing pipes" phenomenon is often the result when an engine with that sorta cam is having some sort of a problem somewhere else that is spiking the EGT's higher than what would be considered "normal".

I'd also recommend double checking the rocker arm adjustments.

Was the rocker geometry/pushrod length checked on this build?

Was the cam actually degreed,I know it was stated as being in @ 108° ICL,just curious if that was confirmed,or was being taken for granted?

We all know how the rollmaster chainsets are,,,they can be confusing as he!! @ times...

Have'nt heard of all that many KRE-D equipped cars needing that much total timing, usually guys here are running like 28° to 30° total with those heads and their modern combustion chamber design,so I'd try knocking back the total, and keep the initial down around 12° to 14° myself, but 16° initial would be fine too if he really likes it there, but I would still take some total timing outta it regardless.

If the fuel curve is right,it should run fine @ idle with that timing set-up.

Just a few thoughts.

HTH.

Try a Q-JET and see if the problem goes away.

Default red hot headers

Intake gasket leak...Especially if it is a newer motor. I beat your bolts need re torquing on the intake bolts remember the proper pattern to torque...Re torque them and see if that does not calm it down some from glowing...IF it does some the gasket may need total replacing or the intake got warped somewhere down the road.

Could be the carb distance under the carb leaning out those 2 cylinders etc.

Ignition I would have to say most all cylinders would be glowing... Not just 2.

Do not dismiss any of the choices BUT start simple first.

Check your carb to be sure all vacuum lines that need to be plugged are...

Good luck, Jim
