Default Good news, great news, bad news, and WTH? news...

I am putting finishing touches on a decent driver that was originally an automatic in rough shape that got rescued. Its a fun RAIII 4 speed now. As you can guess, the 40 plus years of get er done on the harnesses leads to some confusion.

The good news has been coming in little by little,
like I got an 8 track in wired and playing,
dome light working, glove box light working, vacuum hose controls working good for the heater box, etc.

Some stuff I think is great news is a new resistor getting my blower working, and finding the misrouted line I in line amped to the alternator and now have the blower on high also.

A little bad news comes along, I have a live wire I don't now what does, maybe the lighter, have the wrong AM radio that does not work, have not even started on my back up light, etc.

What I can use help on is the ?What the Hell?!! news.

I assume there was a problem with the horn like it was always on or the pressure ground in the steering wheel broke or something.

I went to get the horn working, and my relay looks like this. (the upper right ground to the bolt is for something else)

Ok, I should have black going forward, and I thought green coming back to the firewall by my diagram. It looks like both the black and green go forward.

The black from the single connection does go back to the fire wall.

What do I need to have hooked up to the last post? I cannot find anything on the engine side of the fire wall for it. A black with pink stripe is listed in the diagram, but the only one I see close is going to the hood tach.

When I look on the passenger side of the fire wall, I find some stuff I was not expecting.

What is going on here. Why the purple to purple direct connection on it self with the blue clips? Why is that pink clipped into the yellow, and where is that orange supposed to be going. neither the orange or the gray have power when checked.

What the hell should I be doing with this. It comes off the harness before it goes up over the gauge cluster, and has that orange connector. But what should it be for?

See that serious gauge orange coming from the main cluster at the fire wall (behind/between the headlight switch vacuum hoses?

It ends in this. What the heck should I be doing with it?

If you can tell me what I can try to hook to the emply connection on the horn relay,
or what the heck those big connectors are for, what the clipped wires might go to,
please let me know. I appreciate all the help I have gotten with stuff here.

The 2 purple wires with the 'jumper' is for the neutral safety switch.
It's by passed so it would start in any gear.

The horn relay is the door buzzer/horn relay I think.

The pink probably goes to the fuse box and possibly provides power to the horn relay.

The big orange probably powers most of the connections on the fuse panel?

Or plugs into the panel to power something.

Usually the light gray wires are for IP lamps.

See if you can trace anything down using the diagrams in this thread.

Thanks, those are good pics.

I have ordered the assembly manual to go with my service manual, owners manual, and fisher body manual. I am also going to order the large color wiring diagram.

It almost seems like we need a "harness diagram" to go with the wiring diagram.
So you can know what is in each bundle.

Have you even opened up your 1969 Pontiac Service Manual? There are plenty of good drawings in the Electrical Section (12).

Held for Ransom- sure have. If everything on my car was wired exactly like on the diagram, I might be good to go. Are you just messing with me? It was pretty easy looking at the book, and if that had done it for me I probably would not be on my back under the dash with a light and camera taking pics. Hell, I have had the manual under the dash with me, trying to put light on it, read it, and still have light on and see the wiring. That would probably make a pretty entertaining you tube video.

The combination of different colors here and there, wires I cannot find on the diagram, repetition of colors, etc. is a factor. A single example is I have the right always on feed to my clock. But I also have a live brown always on coming from that same that is not on the diagram, goes to nothing, and I am not sure why it is there. Was there originally an in dash tach it went to, but why always on? Another example is a lead I think should have went to the glove box light, but there already is a hook up for the glove box light. Another is I think the black with pink stripe that should go to my horn relay was used for the hood tach. Another is a blue I think would have went to my oil idiot light that was detached when a real oil pressue gauge was installed.

Another factor is that the diagrams are not based on how the hookup actually looks, which part of the harness it is in, where it should cross the firewall originally, where someone decide to splice, cross the firewall over the decades, etc. Pictures of the harness, the wires labeled where they go to, and that kind of stuff would be awesome compared to the line diagram, even the colored one. I would still have to figure out what mods and stuff had been done over the years, but it might make it easier.

So, when I have a huge gauge wire with a big special connector on the end, and everything is working that the diagram shows that color, etc. I am a little confused.

If someone sees the picture and says, "oh, that's where a power top would connect on a vert" or "looks like they removed the key buzzer" or "they took out the only start in reverse circuit" I can find that kind of information to be very helpful. Some guys here have built, restored, maintain, several cars of the same model Vs. I had one a few years in high school and am working on another again decades later.

Anyways, I just want to be clear I am not just finding stuff and immediately asking questions.

We probably need to know what options your car has.

Pop up headlights?
Rear defog?
Power seats?
AC?
Hood tach?
Power antenna?
Radio type?

Any thing else?

I think the yellow wire may be the power for the radio.

The brake switch have anything hooked to it now?
