Agreed. I like the minimal bling factor too. Did you buy black? At a glance you may not notice! I would probably do those as well.

I am going to deal direct..... talked to someone there.... very helpful, and I dont want a middleman in case of fitment issues....
Plus.... I have not seen any savings going thru one of the vendors that distribute their product....

WOW, I really like those. Wish I would have known about them before I did the Rally Gauges. Now I need to get off of my lazy butt and list my original stuff for sale.

I did this way for several reasons. I wanted something a little more off the beaten path. I think the Speedhut stuff is better looking and you can have them anyway you want them. The options are endless and they do custom work for $25/gauge. Also the DD stuff was going to be another $200 bucks for GPS speedometer conversion and speedhut was running a 15% off sale. So I got the speedhut stuff for less than the DD gauges with the added GPS speedo. I just couldn't resist.

That said I got the idea to put these behind the dash from FatfreeGTO and Old66Tiger.

I'm using Bob's {Old66Tiger} method with the 4" gauges and ABS plastic backing plate to install BEHIND the metal adapter plates as opposed to FatFreeGTO's method of installing 3 3/8" gauges IN the metal adapter plates.

Here is FatFreeGTO's thread link to his installed gauges:

Here is Old66tiger's link to his dash project:

Nick, those gauges look nice. I'd say even nicer with red lighting instead of the blue.... easier on the eyes at night.

Today I got the Speedhut gauges mounted to the dash. I'm really happy with how it came out. I used...

-Template from Bob {Old66tiger}
-1/4" ABS plastic from Ebay
-3-7/8" holesaw from ebay
-7/32 drillbit, drilled at 15* for proper mounting
-1" #6 screws and washers to mount the panel

I think it turned out great! Once I got everything set where I wanted it, I trimmed a lot of the excess plastic off around the edges. No sense in having that in the way. I also had to modify the metal bracket that holds the ignition switch and lighter but that was no big deal.

Next up is spraying the metal bezel and plastic dash! I'm going to use a Krylon satin black and Spaz Stix chrome paint and see how it comes out.

Here's some pics...

Really like what you did with the gauges - one of my pet peeves is surface mounted gauges on custom dashes in these cars. These gauges look great and still keep the styling of the dash.

Red would be cool. That's the nice thing about Speedhut.com You can get whatever you want for colors, designs etc.

I cannot stress this enough though. For whatever reason, the blue is coming through with a very bold look in the pictures. Its much "softer" on the eyes in person.

Those gauges look great! I'm looking forward to seeing how that Spaz Stick chrome paint works.

Me too. I'm really hoping I don't have to pony up for a new re-pop dash. I don't want to spend the money on one when I have 2 really nice AC dashes that just need restoration. Does anyone do the electroplating in a timely manner anymore?

Troy. Do it up. Its not too hard and I don't have very much money into it. If you end up wanting to do it, let me know and i'm more than willing to walk you through it on the phone. Iv'e probably got 4-5 hours into it at this point but I had a template available to me. I'm guessing you could make a template out of cardboard and a pointed poker in about an hour.

Still leaning toward the Dakota Digital for the simpleness of it ( I hope ) ....

I can see this project taking a life of it's own...

New Repro Bezel
New Dash Harness
New Gauges
New Stereo

You're right it could get out of hand fast. I actually have about the same money in the Speedhut stuff and install supplies, that I would have in the DD setup. The plus was that I get a GPS speedo standard on the Speedhut stuff and it's like an extra 200 or so with the DD.

my big question mark would be the Dash Harness..... If I use the DD ...... how much of the original harness would I be using? $400+ is a lot of dough for a fresh fuse box..... So I might skip the new harness....
