Default 79 301 exhaust manifolds

my 79 formula (301 4bbl, manual) is being rebuilt.
the exhaust manifolds are boat anchors... i need to replace them.

the passenger side has a casting # 526707-7
the driver's side # is lost to corrosion....

any advice on how to get the driver's side casting # ?
or where to look for replacements?

i called steven's parts in TX, and they have a reconditioned passenger one,
but without the driver side casting # they can't do anything... thanks. JP

Default Headers?

You may want to consider headers if originality is not a concern. Hooker makes them.

Default Hope they fit...

thanks... Hooker was the only manufacturer that i could find...
i was hoping to keep it all stock, but if headers are the only mod,
i can live with that... i ordered a set through summit. a certain amount
of anxiety as to how well they will fit is the concern now... JP

Please let me know regarding fitment and clearance issues. I am going to buy a set myself. Thanks.

Default Hooker 4111HKR

ok, i'll post when installed...
it'll be a while, apparently Hooker has to make them, so the
earliest ship date was after mid-December...

Any Pontiac exhaust manifold will bolt to the 301.

The only difference is the extra bolt hole on the center exhaust port will not be used.

Default 301 manifolds

Very interesting... thanks Shawn.
i may take a closer look at this.

I've done it on a mockup motor.

The header companies don't say they fit simply because they didn't bother to check the fit on a 3-year-only, low performance engine.

People have been repeating this as fact for a long time but nobody bothers to actually find out.

The only thing you need to watch out for is the lower deck height. It will make the exhaust hang about 1" lower if you use parts made for a conventional Pontiac engine.

That being said, I know of one individual who installed conventional Pontiac headers in a G-body (maybe A-body I don't remember exactly) without any clearance problems.
