Mr. P-Body-Grand Touring Homologated(not homogenized). Used by Ferrari, means a certain number of cars were built to make it legal for a racing class. Jim.

The Tiger reference....
 The Goat reference...  Slang for "Indian" is Injun, Redskin, etc. Some people are sensitive to this, but Pontiac (the brand, and the city) were named after Chief Pontiac. Of course, EVERYTHING offends EVERYONE nowadays, so yes, I guess "Injun" would be considered inappropriate now. I sometimes wonder if guys with pre-1960's Pontiacs ever have a nasty comment made to them about a Pontiac head hood ornament, or some other emblem on their car that shows the Indian head.  Along with this old Pontiac logo, the Cleveland Indians, Atlanta Braves, Washington Redskins, Kansas City Chiefs, and a whole host of other names are now considered "politically incorrect".

Tiger was used in a 63 Le Mans/Tempest ad (showing two seemingly identical cars and the text 'Can you pick the Tiger? Or words to that effect) and in the 421 ad with the open and empty garage and the text 'There's a tiger loose in the streets'. Was that 63 or 64?
I may have imagined it but I think I remember reading 'Tiger' in an ad for a 55 or 56 Pontiac. Well before Jim Wangers time, I'll try and see if I can find it. Any 55/6 advert collectors care to comment? In Jim Wangers book he talks of nearly being fired because of wanting to run an ad for the 70 GTO titled 'A boy and his Goat'. Seems the shiny bums at G.M. thought Goat meant a 'A joke'. JZD gave the OK to run the ad because he knew it was an affectionate nickname but the G.M. heads said no way. |

The first time I can remember the term Goat referring to a GTO,was around 1965 or 1966 in a hot rod or street rodder magazine when I was about 12 or 13 years old. Anyone have any of those old magazines to look through???

 ) Anyone else remember the "tiger in your tank" gasoline promotion, where they gave you a tiger tail that hung out the gas flap? Whose gas was that? For a while, it seemed like every GTO in the world had one.

EXXON Did the Tiger in your tank deal IIRC. They had a mascot at the time that looked like ony the Tiger fro mthe Cereal box.

Interesting 'meannings'.Some I didn't know. MOPAR means Move Over Pontiacs Are Racing.A Mopar guy was giving me the business at a cruise when I told him that, he just walked away and hasn't talked about Pontiacs since.

As you can tell by my screen name I grow up with the tiger ads. Seems like it started around 64 but was in full swing by 65-66. They even had the special order paint code "Tiger Gold". Also the promotion of the GTo tiger racing at the strips.
Goat was just street slang and was usually uttered with respect. In the south poncho was not used much. I think that was a California thing. All this promotion stuff worked. My first Pontiac was a year old 66 tri power four speed GTO and I traded it for a new 68 GTO that I ordered from the factory. Pontiac was the coolest car to have in the mid to late sixties. As far as the politically correct stuff you are studying today that may have been the final nail in the coffin. Who would be sensitive about Buick? |
