Sad ending to a great make. Someday GM will be sorry... if they survive. At least Pontiac lives on with all of us that own them.... same goes for GMC.

The last Pontiac was made in '79.

The Fiero, with the iron duke, was All Pontiac.

They should have offered it up to someone for sale.
Put it on ebay. Shipping to a fleet? How tragic. Jeff |

Except for all the Chevette suspension parts.

They used the common parts that were needed to keep costs down. They probably used an AC Compressor and an Alt from another car too.
But name another GM car like it? How many suspension parts did the GTO's and Firebirds share with the Chebby, Olds and Buick cousins? Same thing for the Grand Prix, Bonneville's, etc. |

No, used Pontiac 6000 suspension pieces and driveline; modified somewhat till 88 when it had it's own pieces.

Front end was Chevette/ rear end 6000 until '87, then the Lotus inspired suspension.

More like the 74 SD. The wheezers with cat converters don't count.

Easy fix, pull that texas sized cat off and throw a decent cam in it.

I hate to tell you but a late model V6 Firebird is as fast as the last 455 Firebird.

In it's day, the Iron Duke SD program was just as dominate as the original SD program.
Like I said, the GTO's and Firebirds all shared parts with other GM cars. And the W72 cars were every bit as strong as any non ram air or HO motor. |

come by sometime and i'll show you a "slow" '78 W72 car

The W72 was as fast as the same year Corvette which is not saying much. The Dodge Little Red Express was faster (as in truck). Trucks did not have to have a cat converter.

fwiw a '89 TTA would smoke just about any other production gm car period.
hp wise, a '78 W72 in stock trim was rated the same as the vette (and that's gm rating and we all know they fudged those) the pontiac made WAY more torque. let's get technical. If you want to use the "my car is faster" mentality, a '70 RA IV car would destroy a '74 SD any day of the week. |
