growing up in that era, I think it was because there were things called "durable goods" back then. and like everything it was built to last. people didn't run out and change their furniture and flooring every few years back then. they were sold on these would keep them from ever wearing out. so I guess they all jumped and drank the kool aid for added protection.

I think a lot of it had to do with that generation living through the depression. They really wanted to take care of the things they spent their hard earned money for.
