5sp in my 65 ???????
Does anyone have any experience putting a 5sp Tremec in one of these cars? I have a 65 GTO and have been thinking about it. Are they a bolt in? Will the mounts work? Do I need to change the clutch or yoke? Does the drive shaft need to be altered? Will the shifter work within the stock console? Most of what I read says they are a simple boltin. But we all know what that means after you buy it and get in home. Oh Ya you gotta have this adapter kit, you gotta weld new mounts to the frame, you gotta cut a hole here, you gotta use a special collar in the console. We just happen to have one for only $$$$$$$$$$ etc.

doug nash = pretty easy. Very minor modifications
Tremec 5spd = cutting huge hole in the driveshaft tunnel None will have the exact console hole without an adapter. Either can be made to fit pretty easy Doug nash = less horsepower and more expensive (shifter is $500 or so) Tremec = more torque capability, horsepower...better gear ratios, etc So, there's a tradeoff

5 Speed
There are a lot of Tremec guys out there and there is nothing wrong with the Tremec. On the other hand you might consider a Richmond. I have two of them..one in a Vette and another in an A-Body. No floor mods and the shifter can be made to fit into the console or the stock shifter hump" with mimimal work. I have all of that work documented with pictures already. BTW the Richmond is available in an Overdrive version and a pair of street versions with 1 to 1 5th gear.
If you want to go forward with the Tremic best of luck to you. I have no experience with the Tremic but if your interested in cinsidering the Richmond let me know. I have the install pretty much down to idiot proof. Glad to help if I can!!! |

Thanks guys. I really though I would get at least one or two who had experiance with a Tremec . I'll have to check in with the chevelle guys. I looked at the Richmond several times and I just like the gears better in the Tremec. Especialy the 5th gear overdrive.

I love my tremec
First upgrade on any new car is a TKO600 No more muncies for me. From what I hear, Richmonds aren't strong enough for me. Fine for a 300, 400 horsepower car. Any more than that and it's questionable

Thanks Clay. Do you have a console? How does that fit.I like the Tremec gears much better, although I'm going with a TKO500.Just a stock 389 4b.I see you must cut a perrty good size hole in the hump but I been assured the console will fit.I'm thinking about useing a auto console, staying with the center shift and fabricating somekind of a plate over the hole.I'll wait 'till I get it in and see how it looks and feels before I cross that bridge.I wouldn't be doing this but the car was origanly a 3sp but had a 4sp in it when I bought it back ing the 80's.Always thinking about doing it and now I have it off the frame so it's a good time.If it is going to have the wrong trans, might as well be a 5sp. Figure I can sell the muncie, 4sp console, shifter etc. and recover most of the cost.Just found a place today that will shorten the drive shaft for me so a Tremec it is.Will keep you guys posted. Thanks for the help.

I used a console with my last one. Didn't change the stock shifter, either
It was an inch too far to the right, so the console fit funny. I never cared. For a while, I had the handle offset by using some long bolts with washers. Funny...but it worked A welder and you could move the shifter to the left an inch and be fine They make a shifter that is already welded at the offset, but want like $250 for it.

Here's what the Hurst offset shifter looks like.
There's a few other pics in this thread: http://forums.maxperformanceinc.com/...d.php?t=597475 The car's not together yet, so I can't confirm the console situation, but it will get a '64 4spd console soon.

Thanks again guys. Pictures are a great help. Both jobs look good. Glad to see someone else is using a Tremec.I've been messing with these mid 60's GTO for about 30 years now but never tried anything but stock.Still think I am going to try the auto console route. They are much easier to find and one heck of a lot cheaper. Like I said the car didn't have a console from new.So the one in there now someone put there later. Hope to sell it and make a few bucks towards the project.
